  • Dialog Format Question

I've been told that you can sparingly emphasize critical words in dialog at a pivotal scene in the story. The problem is, I have one camp say it's done with underline and another camp say no, do it with italics -- which is it?

I don't think it matters. Don't worry about the punctuation police. The point of screenwriting is to have a great, filmic story, and to keep the movie playing in the reader's head as it unfolds.

Try things different ways and use your own judgment. See which way best conveys what you want to convey without being so obtrusive it pulls the reader out of the story.

There is nothing inherently wrong with using Italics, but the way I look at it, your script will be photocopied many times and sometimes it will be photocopied from a photocopy. Italics do not photocopy very well, and if made from a photo copy it can look like Sanskrit so I underline when I want to achieve that kind of emphasis in dialogue.

      That's my reasoning process.
