  • Re: LA Neighborhoods

Is it possible to get over this kind of fear-mongering about crime and the big bad awful city? Not everyone is a gang member. There are quite a few very nice neighborhoods in Los Angeles (and I'm not just talking about the Westside) where people don't get mugged and where drug dealers don't live downstairs.

And the idea that the valley is a den of gangbangers and meth labs and drug dealers... well, that's just ridiculous. All the gangs in the valley are like everyone else who live in the valley -- boring, square. But hey, there's a Poquito Mas on every corner! And pornographers. Lots and lots of pornographers.

Keep your eyes open, don't be an idiot, and you'll be just fine.

People do get mugged on the Westside.

Gang bangers sell drugs in Santa Monica, Venice, and Culver City. Especially Venice. They don't shoot up random Anglo civilians though. (Black civilians are another story.) Upscale Anglos are their best customers, and they don't want to kill that goose.

I agree with your broader point. Crime has been going down in big cities in the US for decades. At this point, Britain has more assault and battery (primarily alcohol related) than we do. Our kill counts are a lot higher because we have lots more guns.

All the times when I was in Los Angeles, I never had any problems in ANY of the Mexican neighborhoods in Los Angeles. (i'm talking about areas south of downtown such as Bell Gardens, and I also spent a lot of time on the Westside, and in Culver City itself.

I think most of the violence between "Latins" and "Blacks" in the context of Los Angeles is gang violence over turf. This makes the media and hits cool headlines, but neglects to mention how many blacks are killed by blacks in the roughest neighborhoods, or for that matter, how many Latins are killed by Latins. Most homicide is still WITHIN the same race. These reports imply that most Mexicans are racist gangsters/murders, and that isn't true.

No more true than the stereotype of the big, bad city.

And the times I was in the Valley I thought it was nice.

Yeah the valley will be great is you are already a made-member of the MS-13 gang. Not kidding here.

If I gave it out in the open it will create a firestorm.
And you don't need to live in LA--just close.
There are plenty of places that will fill the bill.
I'd stay completely out of the LA basin if I were you.

Also... did you loose your mind? Wanting to move to California!?
FYI--most people are trying to get out.

          T

You know, the people who moved to NYC when everyone was trying to move out got very cheap apartments and bought cheap real estate. Some of those people were Americans who just liked the big city, others were recent immigrants. When the economy improved and people liked big cities again, they had massive gains on their real estate. Those who bought in NYC and LA 3 years ago, when everyone was going mad on real estate, lost like crazy.

Many people on Wall Street, behind the scenes, use the contrarian theory. That basically states that if most people are stupid and you want to do the opposite of most people (talking about business related things, which a huge percentage of people have no clue on). So if a bunch of people leave California, fine, they're just making room for the next wave of young people who want to make it, and the next wave of immigrants.

My first thought seeing that this thread was still alive is 'ho man, this thread is still alive? Ain't that guy found a place by now? It's a year later!"

I was bummed to see the discussion had ended up here.

While much violence does stem from the gangs, and can be said to stem from insecurity over turf- one must hasten to add that the very worst of humanity comes out there... namely the 'ethnic cleansing' effort perpetrated against the black population by latin gangs in Echo Park/near the 110 and 50th. These SOBS went after unarmed civilians on 3 known occasions.

There was also that little gem from the avenues gang in the 90s shooting that 3 year old white girl in the head when her dad got lost in their neighborhood.

Now, while I hasten to add that the perps in both cases have apparently been caught, and justice is in process- one should not view the violence problem as somehow contained within gang circles. There are straight up hate crimes being committed here which are on par with anything out of the balkans. Particularly by the extended circle of miscreants tied to MS13.

Needless to say when a 14 year old girl gets gunned down because she's black in the wrong neighborhood- MY neighborhood- I get very very pissed off.

Millions of people died in the Balkans. You didn't have millions of people dying in LA.

And as for the 14 black girl getting killed by Mexicans, who many young black people have been killed by young blacks, and how many young Mexicans have been killed by young Mexicans? Or these deaths don't count because they are in the same race, and are therefore not hate crimes? Which, to a degree, I think the concept of a hate crime is a hate crime. Murder is murder no matter who does it, no matter what the color of the participants and should be punished all the same.

These are turf battles by street gangsters (both black and Mexican), nothing more and nothing less. And if some Mexican gangsters have shot blacks, you can also be assured that some blacks have Mexicans. Or does that also not count................

First, I didn't say Mexican, you did. MS 13 are Salvadoran.

And when I am aware of ****ing ethnic cleansing by blacks against other races or other groups of blacks anywhere, say Rwanda, I will condemn it as well.

But that is not what happenned in my neighborhood. As this is a discussion of LA neighborhoods, y'all can come up with specifics, as I have, or you can save your lame umbrage for someone who deserves it.

I'm talking about a god damn ETHNIC CLEANSING MOTIVATED HATE CRIME that occurred one zip code away from my doorstep. This is straight up KKK style terrorism. You don't like that critique on my part, I could give a **** less. This crime is what it is.

This is in the Bronx. This article, reports how African Americans have attacked black African Muslim immigrants in the Bronx. A culture clash, if you will.......................

Despite the fact that yes, some African Americans are anti immigrant, I would never say all African Americans are anti immigrant or that African Americans as whole advocate violence against immigrants. I wouldn't even say that most African Americans in NYC advocate violence against immigrants.

One could get the conclusion, from certain comments in this thread, that all Latinos in LA want all blacks in LA dead. And that's pure B.S. Are there issues? No doubt. Is there violence? I'm sure there is. But to blanketly say that they're all this way is just plain wrong.

I spent lots of time, in neighborhoods with lots of Hispanics when I was in LA, and no one ever bothered me. This is not to discount the experience of anyone who has sufferred at the hands of whatever gangsters, but to imply that all LA Hispanics are gangsters or racist is just plain wrong.

And I note that this type of violence, whether in LA, or in the case of black americans attacking black Muslim Africans in NY, occurs in GHETTO neighborhoods. Poverty, lack of education, etc are big parts of this, as I doubt any working person would participate in these times of crimes (for starters, a murder record doesn't look good on one's resume).

Nynex, I'm a Hispanic descended woman in LA (well, in and out a lot, but in at the moment.) And I'm very sensitive to such things when they occur. I don't think any such thing has occurred here. Chill.

As QofC notes, no one is saying all Latinos are racists or gangsters. In fact regular blacks and Latinos get along quite well in LA most of the time.

There's a specific issue with Latino gangs acting on orders from the Mexican Mafia, to target blacks at random for intimidation and assassination.

                          "Jeronimus said,

                          ON SEPTEMBER 24TH, 2009 AT 7:18 AM
It would have been a lot cheaper to simply keep these people out of the US in the first place, than put them in prison. The Treason Lobby is picking America’s pocket while destroying the country.

I think America imprisons far too many people, and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if the prison industry was in favor of open borders."

That's why I'm so sensitive to the topic. I think this is being pushed in the media by people who are anti immigrant. So they love to be able to point and say, oh wow, Mexican gangsters are killing blacks, keep these people (Mexicans) out of the country.

That's where this argument ultimately leads to.

And that why, when it's mentioned that Mexican gangsters kill blacks, no one can mention how many blacks have died at the hands of other blacks in LA, or how many Mexicans have died at the hands of other Mexicans in LA. Or, for that matter, since there are black gangsters, what are the Mexican casualties at their hands. Because I'm sure the bloods and crips don't just sit their and not retaliate. That's because a specific, anti immigrant agenda is being pushed, which is just FOUL.

I'm saddened, disappointed and hurt by where this thread is going--I'm not the only one. It's an emotional reaction to dwelling on the worst of a population of fifty-million Latinos.

Can any ethnic group say they don't have bad apples? I think not. Yet Latinos are open season.

I hope my fellow DD'ers will employ some sensitivity in their comments on the subject of L.A. neighborhoods and the people who reside here.

These comments are born out of ignorance. Latin America has about 150 million people of African descent. To tell you the truth, a lot of Latin countries are much more African in religion and culture than African Americans.

Go to Brazil, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, parts of Nicargua,Colombia, Venezuela, and you'll find a significant number of people practicing African based religion. Their music is heavily influenced by African music, and the language used in their songs often contains a lot of African words. Celia Cruz, the famous Cuban star, often sang songs about African based religion like Oshun y Chango. (two gods worshipped over a huge part of West Africa). La India, a Puerto Rican singer, has a song called Yemaya y Oshun, again, about two African gods commonly honored in Puerto Rico and a number of other Latin countries.

This doesn't negate the fact that there can be and are racist Latinos, but at the same time, a large number of Latinos are black and mixed race.

And for the record, I, a black person who speaks Spanish, had no problems when I went to South America (Paraguay and Brazil), and I grew up in a mostly Latino neighborhood in NYC.

Nor did I have problems in LA, in areas like Pasadena, Culver City, etc.

Of course you realize that Mexicans, Salvadorans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Cubans, are all different.

No one, and I mean no one, was making generalizations about all Latinos, or all Mexican Americans.

The issue was gang crime, and it's effect on life in Los Angeles. It's an issue here. Why pretend otherwise?
