  • You have a great title for your spec - can you protect it?

WGA registration helps to protect the screenplay itself but not its title.
A great title is a valuable item. Can anything be done to protect it?

      Copyright doesn't cover titles.

There's an agreement amongst film producers in which they can reserve titles - I've forgotten the details but someone else'll probably have them. And you can apply for a trademark - again I don't know the ins and outs about when and whether your title would be accepted -- but if its generic, then it wouldn't be.

-- but don't worry about protecting your title..

Titles are easy - one to a few words and highly likely to change in the course of a film's development - don't imagine that your title is going to stick. And if someone else has used it/uses it then - no big deal - you can still use it as well, or like I say titles are easy - change it - its probably not as uniquely brilliant as you think it is.
