  • What is a "pre-emptive buy?"

"Hearing that Dreamworks has pre-emptively bought spec script GOOD LOOKING."

    What is a "pre-emptive" buy?

Is it when a studio buys a script without the script going wide, or going out at all?

I've seen it several times in the past few weeks. Just wondering.

    Thanks.

Could mean either of those things or a combo of both. It could also mean that the sp was slipped to a few choice buyers, and one of them made a bid to take the sp off the market.

Yeah, it means it was snapped up before too many eyes got to read it.

Or it's already gone out wide, but one studio makes a quick premium bid that has an expiration on it. You have one hour to say yes or they pull the offer. It's to stay out of a bidding war.

          Jeff,

Sounds like a real "Keep this, or take whatever's behind door #3!" situation.

Thank you. Wanted to make sure I was understanding things correctly.

            Nice situation.
