  • Director/Film books

    Hey all,

I will be attempting to shoot a few shorts this summer. I was wondering if anyone could recommend some books worth reading on the craft of filming.

I.e., visual styles, choosing shots, and anything else that has to do with directing or shooting in general.

    Thanks in advance,
    WR

(If this has been asked before, please feel to direct me there. I searched beforehand but couldn't find anything.)

    Hey WRave,

My favorite is "Directing - Film Techniques and Aesthetics" by Michael Rabiger. The thing is a tome.

    Cheers,

Thx Cutte! (Remember me?) The first books you recommended have made awesome study material so far.

      Here's hoping 4 for 4.

How have you been? Last I heard, you were off shooting a short yourself.

... the difference a syllable makes. I had assumed he was working as a gangland enforcer -- heard he was off shooting a shortie. Oops.

That's a good one. I also like Film Directing: Shot by Shot: Visualizing from Concept to Screen by Steven Katz. I'm on my 3rd copy. People keep walking off with them.

Both books mentioned are excellent. I also suggest you really know inside your head what you want visually, the books will then help you get there.

Bruce BLock's The Visual Story is great. It explicitly spells out what is intuitive for great directors.

I just picked up Cinematic Storytelling by Jennifer Van Sijill. It's helpful for both screenwriting and directing.

I would check this out to give you an example of what's in it.
