    Re: Calling Female Screenwriters --

It's not always true, but generally, I like to go to the movies alone and do it 75% of the time.

I think it's because young girls are still busy keeping the boys happy. I see it amongst teenagers all the time. There's a small tribe of them, maybe five boys and only two or three girls, and the girls giggle at each other and squeal a lot and when it comes to conversatons about what movie they'll go and see the girls giggle a bit more and shrug.

But also I think boys want to be seen as being boys. You know, tough guys.

And boys go out more. They can't sit still for long, they have to be out there doing something. And there aren't many places teenagers can go at night.

I go to the movies alone sometimes, but The Assassination of Jesse James wouldn't be the kind of movie I'd go to. I'm more likely to go to an arthouse film, a chick flic or an Al Gore-type documentary.

I agree with Joan. I go to see movies on my own fairly often, but I'd never pick The Assassination of Jesse James for that. First of all, it's the sort of movie that's interesting to talk about afterwards. Second of all, it usually takes some coaxing to get me to westerns. (I did see The Assassination of Jesse James, but it was because a friend invited me to a screening.)

Most of the time when I go to the movies on my own, it's 'cause I'm stressed out and I spontaneously decide to take a two-hour break from the world and decompress. So it's usually either something light and unchallenging, or something EVERYONE I know has seen and told me is really, really good. (Because the last thing I want to do when I'm stressed is see a movie so bad it's going to piss me off that I paid to get in.) And I agree that docs are good for solo viewing as well.

One factor that has nothing to do with movie quality or appeal is that it seems like women often have less free time than men. (And, if you go by earning statistics, probably less disposable income as well.) I'm not basing this on any concrete data -- just my personal observation that the women I've known (both single and married) seem to overextend themselves on a regular basis. Even if I wanted to invite a girlfriend along to one of my spontaneous movie outings, I'd be hard pressed to find one who wasn't scheduled within an inch of her life. Maybe a lot of women aren't going to the movies because they already have five other places they need to be at once.
