It seems I'll have to wait until I'm back in Edinburgh before I can buy this issue, since I haven't come across anywhere anywhere here in northern California that sells it

Right now, my top ten is...

      Up
      The Hurt Locker
      Adventureland
      Where the Wild Things Are
      Inglorious Basterds
      The Messenger
      In the Loop
      An Education
      Away We Go
      The Fantastic Mr. Fox

Still want to see A SINGLE MAN and DUPLICITY.

I can't even think of ten good films from 2009, let alone a TOP ten.

They should have narrowed the nominees down to three instead of bumping it up to ten.

Last thing I want to see is a mediocre film's dvd cover proudly proclaim that it was nominated for best picture, but with ten nominees, that's hardly a big deal.

        1 - Up

I'll stop there, because that's the best picture I saw from last year.

I thought I was alone on this. I've seen about 5 good movies this year, the rest were mediocre. Overall a lackluster year, for me anyway.

Right. It's sad this list is just...good. I mean, I enjoyed these but none of them blew me away, let alone deserve a best film Oscar.

Lackluster year. And yet b.o. went through the roof.

This is the first fall/winter in ages that I haven't gone to see an Oscar contender. I usually consider this time more exciting than summer.

I'll probably catch HURT LOCKER tmrw in Culver City though.

Today, we have more theaters than ever, the biggest theaters ever, and the highest ticket prices ever.

Match that with James Cameron's return to sci-fi that debuted groundbreaking new visuals and the best 3D ever...what did you expect?

I live in SF. I think there is a mag shop on 24th street in Noe that sells the Magazine.

I'll be in SF on Wednesday to catch my plane home, so maybe I'll get lucky and find a copy.

Speaking strictly about the Best Picture Oscar-nominated films, I'll match any 5 of 2009's ten nominees to the 5 from 2008.

Benjamin Button and Slumdog were both a mess and I didn't give a hell about Milk, Frost/Nixon or The Reader - three films whose subject matter interests me less than what the weather will be like tomorrow.

At least this year, we have some films nominated that people might actually want to see - and probably enjoy if they did.

I know that is the whole point of having 10 instead of 5 - get people to care - but I'm sure the noms would still be fairly decent even if they stuck with 5.
