  • NYTimes Article - The Spec Script 1990

While googling something the other day, I came upon an old NY Times article written in 1990 regarding the beginning of the spec market boom. A really cool snapshot of the past, but one that has some present day similarities as well. Check out the quotes by a 28 year old Shane Black and as well as a new spec script just sold called BASIC INSTINCT.

Since "42" did well, I'm surprised Mr. Helgeland hasn't resurrected "The Ticking Man".

"Attaching a producer is simply an agent's ploy to up his commission,'' says Mr. Roth of Fox in words similar to those chosen by three other studio heads.

''The producer doesn't have a relationship to the material. He has a $100,000 relationship with the agent.''

-- Remember that next time you see Joe Roth attach himself to a script.
