And the more that get made, the deeper the pool; the deeper the pool, the more likely they are to win best picture in future years."

    less to do with the subject matter of the indie movies cited than with the Academy's move to preferential balloting for best picture. dividing the #1 votes between two or three commercially successful frontrunners allows for a smaller but more passionately lobbied movie like Moonlight to win with more #2 or #3 preference votes
