Anyone have any info on when Expo quarterfinalists etc might be announced? I saw on their website that finalists are announced in early to mid October, so I figured if this were like other contests, there'd be a first cut around now then semifinalists announced in another week or two.... ?

      Re: Expo competition

Last year, they announced the quarterfinalists October 6th, and the semifinalists Oct. 15th or so. I don't remember when the finalist announcement finally came -- I just remember that my script didn't make the cut!

Last year I got the finalist notification on October 20th, at 11:57p.m. PST. I hope that helps.

Kullervo, did being a finalist (or winner) in this competition help your career? Did you get many requests for your screenplay as a result?

No. I got five requests, all from places that would shred a query letter coming in the door, but they didn't go anywhere.

I emailed Jim Mercurio about this (expo coordinator) and he wrote back stating the announcments will come (at latest) one month before the expo, but hopefully sooner.

Padget, what genre did you enter in? I entered in comedy.

And I've got an action-adventure entry that I hope has "DB Pro" stamped all over it.

Mine was a Family Comedy, so I assume it will get entered into both the Family and Comedy categories.

Hopefully, the QFs will be announced this week!

Here's a question: They say the winners in each category receive airfare and hotel as part of the award package. So do they announce the finalists prior to the Expo, or would a finailst pay his or her own way, then get reimbursed? Of course, I'm not counting on anything, but I'm just curious as to how that works.

We contact the finalists 2-3 weeks (aim for 3, this year it could get ugly) before the Expo and tell them to book a flight and we will reimburse them. They know they have won a major prize, but they don't know which one until the final ceremony. But if you are a finalist and your script is a broad comedy, detective parody called Dr. Chuckanut and Willy Burgerbun, you can assume you didn't win the Histroical Epic genre prize.

Does the expo announce quarterfinalist or just semi?
