I've gotten one request so far for my Nicholl SF script. Anyone else getting much?
Two requests on Friday...both from lower-level agencies for my Semifinal script.
Two years ago, the same script reached the Quarterfinals and received over a dozen mid to high level solicitations.
Either they're being more selective this time, or, placing in the Nicholl's doesn't have the same cache as it used to. Of course, it could also mean no one wants my stuff -- but you would at least think they would want the logline first before making that call.
Or quarter and semifinalists could stop relying on people contacting them and go on the offensive (as many have suggested here and elsewhere).
I heard two great stories at Austin from 2004 Nicholl semifinalists: one had a script purchased by a company that found him (or was queried by him; this one I don't remember) through his being on the Nicholl list; the second queried companies, including Stephen Cannell's, which ended up buying the script -- the film is now in post.
It's a tad early to count out more contacts. The list has only gone out to a few dozen companies and agencies; it will eventually be in the hands of over 200 (not counting any extracurricular distribution done by assistants, etc.).
And I forgot to mention that Bill True's RUNAWAY, which won the best film jury award at Austin, was a 2002 Nicholl semifinalist, and he thanked the competition in his quite moving acceptance speech (sadly, his wife had died earlier this year).
Connie's Austin-winning script THE QUESTION OF KADY has reached the Nicholl semifinals the past two years.
Karl Williams' PUNCTURED, which I think won both horror and Burnt Orange awards at Austin, was a Nicholl quarterfinalist this year. He also won comedy with a second script! He took home three of those beautiful typewriter trophies.
My QF has had two requests. But it's being considered at a number of other production companies that either my attorney or I or a friend on my behalf contacted.
