  • Does Austin screenwriting contest even rate anymore?

I've been searching here and, unless I'm missing something, I don't find anyone talking about the Austin FF screenwriting competition, at least not for a looooong time.

I thought it was one of the premier competitions for writers. I've been a second rounder there (got encouraging feedback) and submitted again this year and have heard nothing so far. Has anyone else heard about their submissions? Have you even submitted?

    Thanks!

There have been threads pretty much each year about Austin. Here are three from the last three years:

IMHO, it's still top 3 in terms of reputation with possible reps. I'm not sure anything short of being a finalists or winning moves the needle much, but that's true of every contest.

I think the fundamental problem for Austin's competition model at this point is they continue to receive 14k-ish total entries across all categories every year. So the first-round reads are going to be even more of a crap shoot given the scarcity of enough quality readers to handle that volume in the time needed. At the least, they should take a cue from the Academy and limit applicants to one entry per year, or maybe one entry per category.

14K entries? Holy cow, that's insane!

I thought they had way more than that?

Good to know. Thanks, Jeff. Guess I'd better win, then. 😉
