I was talking to someone who won at Austin in the past, and he said that they are big on reading aloud the winners. So, if your script opens with a lot of visuals/action and isn't dialogue intensive, it doesn't stand a chance. Is this true?

Re: Reminder- Austin Film Festival- 2 weeks until early deadline

The Austin Film Festival does a reading of the Adult/Family and Comedy winners at the Conference. We have a panel of writers- taken from our A-list panelists- who participate in choosing the winner. They look for the best script - whether it be action, thriller, drama, etc...

More dialogue and less action does not necessarily equal a winning script.

I hope this clears up your misconception.

Best of luck to all who enter this year. Look forward to great reading.

I got an email from the Austin Film Festival today and it had this:

"All 2006 Screenplay Entrants registered by September 15, 2006, to attend the Austin Film Festival Conference (October 19-22, 2006) will be eligible for a drawing for a private meeting at the Conference with Curtis Burch (Latitude Productions). Three registrants will be selected for this one-of-a-kind opportunity. Curtis will read the three individuals' scripts prior to meeting for half an hour during the Conference. Formerly from Lightstorm Entertainment, Curtis is a huge supporter of the Austin Film Festival and screenwriters. He recently began his own production company, Latitude Productions."

I guess I'll be registering by Sept. 15.

So what impresses those folks in Texas? I have a script that advanced in the Nicholl three years running but never made it past the first round in Austin those years. Should I take the hint that I'm just not their flavor-of-the-month and save my entry fee?L.

Can you enter any genre, or is it just family, comedy, sci fi?

                  Today,

I reviewed the rules just now.

As I interpret them, you can enter a script from any genre, but you have to enter it in either Adult/Family OR Comedy. All scripts must be entered in one of these two categories.

It is strictly my interpretation, but it would seem to me that adventure, thriller, mystery, historical, drama, and such could be entered as Adult/Family.

After entering a script in Adult/Family OR Comedy, you can additionally enter it for:

                  (1) The Sci-Fi award if it is sci-fi, fantasy, mythical storytelling, horror, or something in that vein.

                  (2) The Burnt Orange category if it is a script that could appropriately be filmed in Texas.

                  Just my interpretations.

Re: Reminder- Austin Film Festival- 2 weeks until early deadline

The categories are very confusing to me, as I wrote a family adventure comedy, kind of in the tone of Spy Kids...

So, is it an Adult/Family script, or a Comedy? No idea...

Re: Reminder- Austin Film Festival- 2 weeks until early deadline

I entered a script that I call an English comedy so I entered it in the comedy category. Some people who've read it think of it more as a drama/comedy and of course, I asked them this *after* I sent in my entry. Ultimately, you have to decide which you think best describes your script. Or, enter it in both categories...but you'll have to pay twice.

                      Good luck!

I realize the first sentence is convoluted but I just woke up from a nap. Sorry.

Thanks CB, thats what I interpreted the Adult/Family category as well, to be all-inclusive pretty much.

does anyone know if you can submit a single check for both categories? for example, i need to send in the $30 submission for Adult/family, but then add the sci/fi fee as well.

anyone know how i can do that?

                            thanks

I bet if you write a check covering both amounts, they'll be happy.
