Film associations

Anyone have experience with local film associations? I've been wondering how many places, especially outside of L.A., have organizations that allow people interested in film to come together and how they function.

Can you share any thoughts about how yours functions, things to do or avoid, etc.? Do you do once-a-month mixers? Do you have groups, such as screenwriting or film appreciation? How do you fund your activities?
