In such a case the quality of the script didn't change
so what's the reason for the poor ranking on the second try?

You're all kidding when you ask questions such as this one, right?

If not, I'll offer a question in lieu of an answer. How many times have you read an end of the year top 10 movie list and reacted "I can't believe they left off xyz and put on abc"? Individuals react differently to art in whatever form. Accounting for taste is an impossible task.

        Exactly.

That's why the argument that 'the script sucked,' which others have made as to why a script doesn't make the cut in a contest, is not consistently a valid one.

Advice from writer, Kelly Sue DeConnick. "Try this: if you can replace your female character with a sexy lamp and the story still basically works, maybe you need another draft.-

Since I'm the only person in this thread who's definitively said that you didn't advance because your script sucked... might I point out my last post on the topic:

"I still stand by: a lot of scripts suck.

But, I will amend to: If yours didn't, and yours truly slipped under the radar -- it will get noticed. If it repeatedly slips under the radar, maybe you need to take a look at it."

An earlier screenplay of mine won 1st place in one contest, didn't place at all in another, and only made it as a semi-finalist in a third. Seems in the end it's contingent upon each reader's particular sensibilities, and if he/she digs my dark, twisted humor.

The luck of the draw, I guess.
