I think if you write a fantastic script it doesn't matter how close to the deadline you send it in. If the reader has just read 5 scripts that are absolute crap, his/her kids are yelling in the background, the dog just crapped on the carpet, and then he/she starts reading your well crafted, beautifully flowing script that takes his/her breath away, then you'll do okay.
