  • How to Deal with a Manager's notes?

i have an upcoming talk with my manager about a script i needed notes on. before i gave him the script to read, i told him i was 50/50 on two routes for the story. since then, ive grown more fond of one route so how should i handle the conversation if he is leaning towards the other route? i dont want him to feel as if i made him read the script for nothing and im sure he'll have other great notes to offer.

Why tell him about the two routes at all? Why not write your script telling the best story you can and see what he says (and not prejudice him about the script before he reads it?) Unless you are sitting down with the manager beforehand, hashing out the script, there's really no reason to ask what route he'd like the script to take -- it's your script.

Write the script and hand it in. If he doesn't like it, then pitch Idea B as a way of fixing it and see what he says then.

have all the ammo you need to sell which route you want to take. this means knowing as much detail with your characters, their motivations, and character arc as possible. you must know how you want the story to end. if you can write out a full treatment - better!

good luck and don't fret so much. writing IS rewriting!

just realized i posted this in the wrong section.

so im going to ask him to give me the notes and while he gives it to me, should i just let him go on even if i disagree with a note? or maybe i agree. should i let him know im listening by going "mm hmm and okay?" or just give him my thoughts after he's done?

I think you really have to pay close attention to how your manager is responding. Will going a certain direction temper their enthusiasm for the project? If so, you have a very real problem.
