this is equivalent to getting a quarter-finalist spot in any contest.
so they keep going and maybe next time, semi-finalist.
the mentality is already there. just in a different medium.
Except that if you win the lottery you know what you will get: money. That's the end in itself. With a contest the end result is not just to win, but to get repped, optioned or sold as a result of that win. That would be like a guy gambling in hopes of getting rich AND dating Angelina as a result

Anyway, good luck to all who enter.

      There's what Nikee said...

For my part, I am fairly new at trying to bother getting scripts out there. As I looked around trying to figure out how, I ended up entering a bunch of contests. Since that time, I've decided there aren't many worth entering, and I wouldn't make the same circuit again. The ones with big money and/or some tangible leads I'd do in the future, but as you already seem to know, these are few.

For me this was a live & learn sort of thing, and I think the contest market thrives pretty much on people "learning," if you will.

Nicholl, Page, Tracking B, maybe scriptaplaooza. Any others worth entering?

Missed page this year and entered a bunch of crappy ones as a newbie and wasted $$$, won't make that mistake again.

          Re: Fresh Voices screenplay contest

I entered in the Summer and got feedback. The feedback was short (one page), but it was actually helpful as far as how I could improve the script. I think you can also pay for longer coverage if you wanted to. Having friends and family read a script just doesn't help too much because they'll love everything you write. Writing groups tend to be supportive, but I need more criticism/honesty of what's wrong.

I entered mainly because it had multiple script categories and not too many people heard about them. I thought I'd have a better chance at winning. Yes, it might not help with me getting an agent, but it's a step in the right direction. If I didn't make their early deadline, I probably wouldn't have entered.

It's easy to become jaded with contests because many seem to just be in it for the money. At least, I got something back. It sucks for some contests where you just give your script and money and then there's silence. You just don't know how good or bad your script was. Well, the contest is over ... but this is just in case someone wants to enter a script for next year.

            Re: Fresh Voices screenplay contest

I entered this at the last minute, as usual. Their contest spiel was interesting and different, plus the feedback will be nice to get - and will prove that they actually read it.

It's an actual management/prod co that uses only their in-house readers. Both Mopap and Miko liked their feedback, so they're on the ball in that regard.

            Good luck to us schmucks!

I don't need luck, as, since I already received the feedback, I know I won't be winning. If I'd had the time, I don't know if I would've rewritten or not, but as is I'm sure you've got me beat!

So I don't know if "like" is the right way to describe my feeling about the coverage, but it was well considered regardless.

At this point I'm more curious to see how far I go on my lousy scores. I noticed their announcement dates changed from something recent to "TBD" which bodes poorly.

So, anyhow, good luck to you instead, cshel.

                Re: Fresh Voices screenplay contest

I had a GREAT experience with the Fresh Voices Screenplay Competition. They really do get your scripts out to top flight production companies. It's not a contest come-on. They genuinely offer new writers the opportunity to get material to producers they could never reach on their own.

The prizes (including the cash prize) came immediately(!)

In a landscape littered with questionable screenplay contests, it's nice to find one that's for real.

                  Congratulations new member Louise!

They seemed like cool people. I thought the notes were good. They responded to emails quickly and in a friendly, knowledgeable manner. They even emailed to tell me how close I came, like Nicholl does.

The only negative was that they pushed back all of the announcement dates after the deadline - but it was their first year running the contest.

Congrats, Louise. Glad to hear Fresh Voices liked your work.

I got to the Quarter Finals with one of my scripts, but that's where it stayed. I wasn't surprised that it didn't go past that round because I've learned quite a lot since I submitted it last August and I now know what needed to be fixed (mainly it was too long among other issues). I hope to do better in future contests.

it kind of looks like one company looking for a project thingy and they thought they could earn some money while they do their search. this is quite common with many of the smaller contests. it's getting old. ironic how it's like "chasing a trend" which as writers we should NOT do in our writing.
What's ironic is that you entered and placed. Congratulations, BTW.
