  • Best Screenwriting Contests

Which ones do you think are truly worth entering and why? I only entered the Nicholl (soon to hear one way or the other) but wonder if I'm missing out on some other weighted ones.

    Re: Best Screenwriting Contests

    Hi A.J.

Here's a thread you may find helpful:

    http://messageboard.donedealpro.com/...ad.php?t=60168

By the way - I used to think scriptapalooza was a good contest based on a few things I had read online. I have no first hand knowledge of any contests at this point as I've never entered any (plan to next year).

Some of the scriptapalooza threads on here were some of the bigger sized ones in the past and I *thought* it was a good contest based on some praise I read.

Here's some other info about the scriptapalooza contest:

    http://messageboard.donedealpro.com/...ad.php?t=61078
    http://messageboard.donedealpro.com/...ad.php?t=48400

It doesn't seem like anyone on DD is talking about scriptapalooza recently.. compared to the other major contests. What does that tell you?. It doesn't appear to be reputable anymore from what I can tell. It just doesn't seem to be the best option compared to the other contests. If you only enter 3-4 contests, there's better options to spend your money on.

I stopped entering because of the lack of success stories from winners as compared to PAGE or Nicholl.

I think the main thing is not to enter too many contests (unless they're free). Can cost you a lot of money with nothing in return. I think the Nicholl plus one other is plenty. If your screenplay is really good it will get picked up. If it's not really good, it won't get picked up however many contests you enter. Save the money you would have spent on the extra contests for quality feedback on your script. Then re-enter the script in the Nicholl.

Not quite. I get the impression that TrackingB is more oriented toward marketability while Nicholl and Austin are more interested in ... quality. Though it all comes down to the individual(s) who read your script. I wouldn't bother with any of the rest.

              Great advice.

...Though I also like contests like "Blue Cat Screenwriting Competition" and "Creative World Awards" both of which provide (brief) feedback for a small sum. Blue Cat gives you two small feedback reports by two different readers, so (in effect) you get two chances of someone liking your script. The feedback I got from Blue Cat and Creative World Awards was spot on and very helpful. Creative World Awards is genre-based which is great if your script is an action, sci-fi etc genre.

When you get feedback, you also know that someone has actually read your script as opposed to assessed it on the first few pages (a concern some of us have given the low pay some contest readers receive, the number of scripts they have to get through etc).

Nicholl is the best. Austin is also highly rated.
