      I think the thing to keep in mind is films like The Terminator and Die Hard are superior actions movies because they have superior characters. That said, different genres demand different amounts of character depth. Characters in dramas need more depth because they have to do more of the heavy lifting -- they don't have action set pieces or strong driving narratives like saving the wife from terrorists that action movies do. I think the thing the Nicholl rewards regardless of genre is good characters. A Good Hunter, a finalist from last year, was a masked killer genre movie -- and not terribly good on that end -- but it had good characters. Same as all the other finalists scripts I read. So write whatever genre you favor but make sure the characters are good.
