  • Sundance Diverse Writers Workshop

    From The Black List:

Next month, the Black List will announce a partnership with the Sundance Institute, and we are very excited to share a small part of it with you today.
On February 15, the Sundance Institute Feature Film Program will be piloting a one-day workshop in Los Angeles for emerging screenwriters and/or writer/directors as part of their Diversity Initiative. Twelve to fifteen writers currently developing a narrative feature screenplay will be selected to participate. Writers must be a member of an underrepresented or underserved community working in film (with priority placed on racial/ethnic and gender diversity.)
For this initial pilot year, applications are accepted by invitation only from Sundance Institute staff and through selected Sundance Institute partners. The Black List will recommend up to ten writers to be considered for participation, with Sundance Institute making the final selection of one filmmaker out of those recommended to be included in the workshop.
If you meet all of the below requirements and are interested in pursuing this opportunity, please complete the opt in that follows the link below no later than Monday December 24 at 9 AM PST. Your eligibility and decision to opt in to this opportunity will not be visible anywhere on the site.
    1. Writers must not have written or directed more than one produced narrative feature film.
    2. Writers must be based in the Los Angeles area OR be able to get themselves to Los Angeles for the day of the workshop at their own expense.
    3. Writers must be a member of an underrepresented or underserved community working in film, with an emphasis on ethnic/racial and gender diversity.
    4. Writers must be able to complete, between December 26 and 31, a brief application including a one page artistic statement, one to two page plot synopsis of your script, and brief narrative biography of no more than one page.
Based on the data we've gathered about the scripts by the writers who opt in, we'll choose up to ten to complete the Institute application. Those who are selected will receive the application via email by 5 pm PST on December 26 and expected to complete it by midnight on 12/31/12. We will then pass the applications to Sundance, and they will choose one writer to participate in the workshop.
If you have any questions, feel free to email us at [email protected].
