Animation Collaborative

So I know we're screenwriers, but I feel storyboarding ties in to screenwriting, so....

Has anyone here taken classes at the "Animation Collaborative," specifically on storyboarding?

For that much money, I would expect transferable college credit. And a huge chunk of that class will be aimed at people who are aiming for entirely different job descriptions than the main one most of us are pursuing.

I love this part: "Some experience with story concepts and some drawing skills are recommended but we are happy to evaluate students with less experience."

...another way of saying, "We won't turn down anyone's money." haha.

Instead, you could buy every book there is re: storyboarding on Amazon and still probably come out $1k in the black.

What's your objective?

Sounds great. There have been many times where I wished I could have a storyboards of my scripts. But I fear, and I know, I can't draw worth ****. I would be wasting $1300 to just draw stick figures.

Hey Carlos, I'd be happy to consider doing storyboards with you in the future - just let me know!

I feel they go hand in hand, to some degree. I would love to have a creative job, that develops my writing skills and uses my art skills (I have some art on my website, but mostly in the form of portraits - I used to do comics and whatnot too), while writing in the evenings.

Even a lot of writers who sell scripts/ novels say it isn't enough to live off of.

So that's one objective (make some contacts/ build a portfolio in the style Pixar would like). Second is to just learn the stuff better for my own films.

But I agree - pricy!

I'm assuming your ultimate aim would be to sell your animation spec, in which case be aware that animation specs are a tougher sell than live-action specs.

Why? Because most are written in conjunction with a composer and/or song writers. Thus most animation screenplays are written in-house - occasionally a top scribe is hired from outside (but they don't work solitary, they work closely with the studio team on the screenplay).

Do a google. John August (and others too) wrote about animation specs being a tougher sell in an already very tough spec market.

Thanks Presto - but no, I know how tough they are supposed to be. I wrote a couple early on to get them out of my system, but my last several specs (and the ones I am trying to push) are not animation.

I just like to have two goals at once, and one of them is to work in an animation studio, because I love that stuff.

i think the animation union offers affordable classes in storyboarding. it's somewhere in burbank i think.
