Since there's 596 quarterfinalists . . . I don't know whether to be excited about my one script advancing or seriously bummed about the two that didn't. I mean . . . 596? Supposedly, it's 12% of all entrants, but it still feels like too many.

I guess this is one for all the contest thrill-seekers that wish places like Austin or Trackingb provided an extra does of validation with more incremental advancements (and corresponding announcements). However, it's a double-edge sword if a script doesn't make the final cut of such a large list . . . if you don't make the cut, it kinda stings.

If there are 596 quarterfinalists, their math isn't quite accurate (actually, in one place they say 12%, in the other, 10%). Since they list the total number of scripts as 6669, that means about 9% moved into the quarterfinals.

This is similar to Austin, which generally advances 10-12% of entrants into its second round.

Sorry about the 2 scripts that were passed over, Aqua, but congrats on the one that made it.

Congrats to all the other quarterfinalists. My comedy also made the list.

I'm bummed the TV spec I wrote didn't make it. After re-reading it I can kind of see why. Oh well, everyone falls on their face a few times before making it right? ....right?

Either way, congrats to you all who made the list!

Yes. I fall on my face all the time. Trust me. And since I don't know any better, I keep getting back up and asking everyone, "Do you think I'm pretty?"

Re: Final Draft - Big Break Contest

In with my sci-fi thriller. My first reaction was the same as Acquaformosa's, they certainly have a long list of quarter finalists. But it's about the same percentage as Austin, so I don't know why it seems so much longer to me...

Interesting write up...gives you a breakdown by genre:

Final Draft Big Break Genre Popularity

A breakdown of the submissions paints a portrait of the aspirations of today’s fledgling writers. There were 4,952 feature screenplay submissions for the seven genre competitions, with the finalist from each genre moving on to the judging for the feature screenplay grand prize. The genre submissions break as: action adventure (615); comedy (1,145); dramas (1,373); family/animation (255); period/historical/war (424); sci-fi/fantasy (455); and thriller/horror (685).
The 1,716 television entries, all of whose category winners compete for the TV grand prize, break down as follows: original half-hour pilots (579); spec teleplays for existing half-hour shows (236); original hour-long pilots (759); and spec teleplays for existing hour-long shows (142).
