  • What genres do well in Nicholls?

Does anyone know what genres have a higher number of QFs, SFs and Finalists in the Nicholls?

Greg Beal has all sorts of stats at his fingertips. You could ask in the Q&A thread he has going on here now. I remember there was also a thread last year where he laid out the genre breakdown for quarter-finalist, semi-finalist and finalists.

Relatively speaking, over the years, genres do about as well as expected in advancing to the Academy Nicholl quarter/semi/final rounds. That is, if 40% of entries are dramas, then about 40% of quarterfinalists are dramas; if 14% of entries are thrillers, then about 14% of quarterfinalists are thrillers; if about 5% of entries are science fiction, then about 5% of quarterfinalists are science fiction, etc.

With one exception: traditionally, comedy underperforms slightly. If 20% of the entries are comedies, then about 17% of the quarterfinalists had been comedies.

Except in 2013, when about 20% of entries were comedies and just over 20% of the quarterfinalists were comedies.

One problem with counting genres is the overlap among genres, multi-genre scripts, and the genres selected by individual writers. This doesn't matter much when talking about thousands of scripts, but the variations become more apparent when discussing several hundred or several dozen scripts. This makes it difficult to present an accurate list of entry genres.

In any case, here are the genres of the 50 finalist/fellow scripts over the past five years:

      drama - 14
      historical drama - 5
      drama war - 1
      drama thriller - 4
      thriller - 2
      supernatural drama thriller - 1
      supernatural thriller - 1
      horror - 1
      science fiction thriller - 2
      adventure fantasy - 1
      action / adventure - 4
      comedy action - 1
      comedy drama - 2
      comedy - 7
      romantic comedy - 3
      romantic comedy fantasy - 1

The above does not account for every genre word used by the writers, as I decided to simplify the list somewhat.

so dark comedies don't preform well? *(which I'd consider to fit into comedy, drama)

Dark comedies perform about as well as any other genre, as stated earlier:

We've distributed contact lists for Academy Nicholl quarter/semi/finalists for the past 25 years. Those lists included the writer's name, screenplay title, genre and contact information.

Log lines, though, were only added last year, with individual writers given the option to include them or not.
