  • Nickelodeon Fellowship questions

I've recently been informed that I made it as a semi-finalist for the Nickelodeon and will have an interview later in the week. Does anyone have any idea what my interview will entail and what I should/shouldn't say? Also, I'm curious for those of you that have participated in the program what the program was like.

    thanks

    Re: Nickelodeon Fellowship questions

Well, there's a new director since I was in the program so I can't say what the interview will entail, but my advice is to just be yourself and make sure your answers actually include an answer to the question asked.

Again, there's a new director so the program has been restructured since my participation in the 2004-2004 fellowship. I've met with the new director and she seems to be very knowledgeable and very passionate about preparing fellows to become professional writers. So, for the most part, I'm sure the day to day of the fellowship will be about, you guessed it, writing. You'll probably write one, maybe two specs. You'll surely have guest speakers come in. You may be placed in some capacity with one of Nick's current shows to either observe and/or participate in the writing process. My experience was very unique, not only because there was a different director, but also because I had worked at the studio as a P.A. right before being accepted to the fellowship, so I knew a lot of people at the studio. I was actually only the second fellow in three years of its existence to get produced episodes of Nick shows under my belt before leaving. The other person to do that was a part of the first year of the fellowship and he's gone on to write for a couple of big-time shows, I mean big time. Me? Since the fellowship ended last October, I've written one more freelance episode of a Nick show, I landed a manager from the no. 2 management company in animation and my manager has been setting up meetings for my partner and I to pitch original series ideas for animated shows around town. Good luck to you.

Anytime. I hope it works out for you.

The studio is great and has a lot of really great people. It's very different from the live-action world in that it's smaller and more closeknit. If you screw someone over in animation you had better be a major player or your name will be mud for a long time to come.

Karen Kirkland who runs the program is a really nice lady as well at the executive in charge of the program, Rico Hill. Both are cool and know their stuff so don't try to BS them. Seriously.
