  • Songs previously used in movies ... ?

Does anyone know of a database/reference site that tells if (and where) a song has ever been used in a movie before?

For instance ... if you wanted to know if a certain song has ever appeared in a movie before? Thanks

    No, but goolging stuff like

    +"song title" +soundtrack / +film etc

    may do the trick.

Use Google, but take it one step further and use it to search IMDB. So in Google you would type -

      site:imdb.com "soundtrack listing" "I can't help myself"

      or

      site:imdb.com "soundtrack listing" "Hotel California"

      Not perfect, but it works.

Larger question which may or may not apply: unless you are producing the film yourself, why does it matter? Screenwriters don't do the music supervisor's job.

            Songs Previously Used In Films

No, there isn't; so, you are best to use a search engine to see if the song is associated with any film, (tho you may also try searching for the composer at IMDb.com). If it's only incidental music, I'd agree with Mr. Martell; but, if the song is an integral part of the story, then you ought to do your research.

Just recently, I've had to add another ditty to an adaptation; and, it appears that the original song was in films only in two renderings of John Gay's THE BEGGAR'S OPERA and Jean Renoir's LA CARROSSE D'OR, but I'm using other lyrics to the old tune, (open in another window, if you wish to sing-along):

While Punch sings, Polly dances about him to his delight.

            PUNCH
            (sings to the tune of
            "Would you
            have a young virgin"
            )
When the heart of a man is oppress'd
            with cares,
The clouds are dispelled when a woman
            appears,
Like the notes of a fiddle, she
            sweetly, sweetly, raises our spirits
            and charms our ears.

Punch joins in Polly's dance, to and fro, and side to side,
            about the stage.

            PUNCH
            (sings)
Roses and lilies her cheeks disclose,
But her ripe lips are more sweet
            than those,
            Press her.

Punch catches Polly in his arms and embraces her.

            PUNCH
            (sings)
            Caress her,
            With kisses.

Punch gives Polly a loud kiss.

            PUNCH
            (sings)
Her blisses dissolve us in pleasure
            and soft repose.
            (song finished, aside)
What a beauty! What a pretty creature!

Thanks for the ideas, all. Googling would work if I were going after individual songs ... I was just sort of wondering about a general database of "songs used in movies" or somesuch ... More of a casual "I wonder how that music was used" thing. Google comes up with a ton of site hits etc and a specific database might be easier to use ... I remember previous answers how I shouldn't name specific songs too.

Searching www.allmusic.com or www.cdnow.com by song title will tell you, more or less accurately, every album a song has been released on. So if it was on a film's produced soundtrack, it'll come up. It's not a foolproof method by any means, but I've found it fairly useful in the past.
