Booby Traps

I'm trying to come up with a creative design for a device/set-up for booby-trapping an abandoned mine.

Any suggestions about where to look for some ideas?

I guess the golden example is the giant rolling boulder in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

PS. The story takes place in the 1800s.

You could come up with all kinds of stuff. I suggest you look at the equipment they used back then and make up something.

if people will buy a light sensitive trap built by a copper/neollithic tribes- they'll buy into whatever you come up with.

How to trap a booby.

How about a cute little cupboard at the entrance of the mine with one jar of canned fruit on the shelf? Perhaps on the jar, a little ribbon and a note in fancy cursive, "Grandma's delicious summer peach"
The booby out of curiousity or hunger after several attempts, unscrews the rusty lid and the rich smell of summer peach rapidly fills the air....
as well as hundreds of voraciously hungry fruit bats!

Oh no, not that, please!

No need to be overcreative, just use gravity. A truckload of rocks waiting at the top of a slope, released by a tripwire; a vertical shaft covered by rotted planks dusted with dirt; a see-saw rock slab that swings up behind your hero and knocks out a support, collapsing the tunnel or releasing a big rock that corks the entrance and traps your hero inside for eternity.

Though I'm also terrified by the thought of voracious bats nibbling at my fruits. A truly ghastly fate.

There's a brilliant PC computer game called Evil Genius that is all about building a hidden base while you plot to take over the world and kill agents in booby traps. I recommend you check it out. It's very much like Austin Powers (quite humerous). Also you could Dungeon Keeper. Games can offer a large pool from where to draw inspiration.
