  • Cell Phones in secure facilities

Are cell phones permitted in highly secure locations like government/intelligence offices -- FBI, CIA, DoD? Would it be a situation where regular employees have government-issued cell phones that are permitted, but visitors would not be permitted to bring a phone in?

I'm trying to figure out if an employee at the assistant level -- basically a secretarial position -- would have a cell phone at work or not. And also what level of security would be on the land lines. I know that government offices use secure phones that cannot be tapped (if calling to another secure land line), but I don't know if they can be monitored in-house if, say, an employee is under suspicion.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

"highly secure locations like government/intelligence offices -- FBI, CIA, DoD?"

They are more worried about camera phones being used to take pictures of sensitive information, locations, etc.

Employees are allowed to have cell phones depending on their job, clearance, etc.

Interesting question. Code7: would the phones held by secure personnel be somehow "cleared" equipment, or agency-provided? I think the question is really whether an employee could use his or her own cellphone in, say, the FBI building or CIA.

Cell phones would no doubt be agency owned and issued depending on the job and clearance. They would be subject to monitoring and/or tracking.

A low level employee could have a cell phone at work as long as she has supervisor approval, but there would be restrictions regarding use while on the property.

So what's the answer, Code7? You're (seriously) our go-to man for such matters. I'm curious, mostly for future work and not for infiltration and subversion, which I gave up in 1968.

Ha! Actually I know I have a file with the FBI (who in my generation doesn't?), but I'm afraid to ask for it out of fear they'll start watching me again!

I hung out with some pretty shady guys. Even one who'd trained with Che Guevara. Wait... I think someone's watching me from a black car across the street...

Re: Cell Phones in secure facilities

in most DOE and DOD facilities, cell phones are permitted in "uncleared" areas. In cleared areas (higher security), cell phones are not permitted, with the exception of gov't issued phones.

Regarding a DOE facility that I'm familiar with, camera phones were not allowed anywhere onsite until just recently. they finally realized that the only phones available w/o a camera are crap phones.

You'll get the copy they want you to see. You never get the complete file... Freedom of Information Act is a fraud...

Re: Cell Phones in secure facilities

Okay, I think I have some good stuff to work with here. Thanks, guys!

I have no compunction about tinkering the details and moving away from ultimate realism in order to make the story work. (Although maybe not to the degree of "24." They had a supposedly surreptitious dude in the White House ON A WALKIE TALKIE with the bad guys! A freaking loud walkie talkie that any passing person would have overheard. Sheesh. Me, I have neither a contract at Fox nor Keifer Sutherland, so I'm not gonna chance playing quite so fast and loose with the sensemaking.) I just like to know, at least, what the minimum framework is for what is likely/possible/plausible, and then if I want to take a small leap or two from there, I'm okay with that.

I prefer to research and know the facts, and then eff around with them.

But now I have to put on my tin foil hat and hide in a corner, because Code got me all askeert that The Man is watching. Eep!

                      Thanks again, everyone!
