  • filling station

    Hi,

Would you use the word 'court' for that part of a filling station where the pumps are?

'Court' or 'forecourt' or something like that? The roofed part of a filling station where the pumps are.

    Thanks for your time.

I'd use forecourt, or, if for a slugline, simply this:

    EXT. FILLING STATION - DAY

      forecourt?

I bet I'm not the only one who wouldn't know what you were talking about if you said court or forecourt.

EXT. FILLING STATION or GAS STATION would serve you better.

        Re: forecourt?

I'd just say "out by the pumps" or "at the pumps". The pumps themselves stand on what we call "islands", but that refers to the physcial "riser" itself, not a larger "general" area.

FWIW, I haven't heard the term "filling station" used around here in years. We just call them "gas stations" now. They used to be "service stations" back when you didn't even have to get out of your car, and an attendant would do things like check your oil and clean your windshield.

There are a few states which, by law, require that an employee pump your gas. New Jersey and Oregon are two of them; there may be others.

I wouldn't use the term "filling station" unless your script takes place in the 60s or earlier. But that's just me.
