Anyone ever accessed a safety deposit box?

I'm trying to find out what the exact process is when you go in a bank in order to access one.

Searched? Metal detectors? or simply show an ID? Escorted to the box and then escorted to a viewing room?

    Anyone know how this works?

It's got to depend on whether it's just a little 2x6x24 box like mine, where I visit every week with my portable hard drive backup, or if it's a big Swiss bank. For mine, I don't even go to the viewing room because I'm in and out in 30 seconds.

If you're thinking the latter is more suitable to your tale, watch near the beginning of Bourne Identity. He had to do some finger scanning, I think, and/or retinal.

Generally, they need some proof of identification. I just sign a card.

If it's integral to your story, you should get every detail right, so it fits and enhances your story. Because what was done in Bourne was cooler than what I have to do (yawn).

Searching, metal detectors... That's pretty unusual stuff for a safety deposit box. Maybe that's the norm at some very unique high-end bank but for your standard bank none of that applies. Honestly though, I can't think of a scenario where there would search you or run you through a metal detector. What would be the purpose?

          Awesome! Thanks very much guys.

Having a hard time finding this info online and was about to resort to going to a bank and asking, which I doubt would go over very well

          thanks!

                Re: Safe/Lock deposit box procedure

It's been a couple of years since I used a bank deposit box, but I recall two keys were required to access my box: mine and the 'guard's' (bank employee). They would put their key in, turn it, then move away; the box would not open until I inserted my key, but both keys were needed.

They issue two keys, one of which you can give to anyone, but that person needs to fill out a signature card and register with the bank. If you die (or failure to pay the rental fee) the contents of the box are sent to the State and become unclaimed property that heirs can collect.

Any bank representative (not a teller) will walk you through the procedure.

Seriously, that's the best way to figure it out. Just go to your bank, pay the $20 for a year for the smallest box available and then not only will you know the process but you can go back again and again and again if you forget.

didn't you see? he has "bank robber" tattooed on his forehead. they'd never let him rent a box.
