Invisibility
H.G. Wells suggested this might be done by changing the refractive index of the human body to that of air in his novella, so the invisibility did not extend beyond his body. Jack London tackled the notion in two ways in his short story, "The Shadow and the Flash", using both the method of changing the refractive index to that of air and of eliminating refraction altogether, (the former method giving rise to "rainbow" flashes and the latter to shadows). And, before the radio series, The Shadow was a master of disguises and impersonations; then, on radio, he utilizes "hypnosis" to render himself invisible to his foes.
