    The facts as you describe them say murder.

    You can only use lethal force if you have a reasonable belief that your life - or another person's - is in danger. After the guy escapes, his life is no longer in danger.

    A stand your ground law means that you don't have a duty to retreat.

    I suggest you read IN THE GRAVEST EXTREME by Massad Ayoob, a longtime policeman and police trainer. The book covers the law of self defense.

    Of course, what a judge or jury would do is always a crapshoot.

      Posting as a former police officer, this is murder.

      Once the assailants walked away, it's all over. You can no longer claim self defense because the suspect went out of their way to go and find them again. It's also not stand your ground because the ground is no longer being contested when the assailants left the scene.
