  • Re: The Screenplay Mechanic (EvilRbt)

Hi Andrew! Wow! I feel one inch tall! I'm really sorry about that! Thanks for your patience and sense of humor! Also thanks to jtwg50 too! I don't know what I was thinking as I knew your name is Andrew and Screenplay Mechanic. I think that I was thinking so much about chronology and influence and communicating rationally or whatever and drew a complete blank or something like that if that sounds like an excuse ha! Overall I'm letting (emphasis on "me") diffidence to creep in and have stalled myself with writing and have been reading i.e. just read "Catch Me If You Can" and almost finished "Chinatown" and don't know for sure what next... that's right, "The Last Detail", I forgot is in the other half of my Robert Towne book I bought used on my as usual low budget life. I've written 5 feature length and now one short I wrote in March... but leaving them in mothballs. I realize I forgot one more part to my feedback. It's going on 4AM and on another of my nights where my mind is on high speed over drive ha.
    Kindest Regards...

Count me in as another endorsement for the Screenplay Mechanic. He gave me notes this week that were spot on and helped me see what I need to work on to take my writing to the next step. Highly recommended.

The Screenplay Mechanic has reviewed two of my screenplays, Templar and Afterworld, and he gave helpful notes on both. I'd definitely recommend him to new writers who want to know how their work stacks up in comparison to Hollywood material.

                Thanks, everyone!

I have also used the Screenplay Mechanic as well as ScriptGal. (I'm going to make a post on her thread next.) I like how he addressed my writing, the style, the tone and story individually and how it created the whole screenplay.

Being new, I had no idea how my writing stood up against the rest of the field and to me that alone is worth spending the money.

One last thing, the Mechanic gives you a date that he has reserved for your script and (at least for me) he sent his coverage the day he said he would.
                  Great feature.

I only have a couple of September spots left and I'm already taking reservations for October. Book ahead and remember I don't need the script until the day before I read it...

I've read every conceivable genre/concept you could think of and I like to believe my story skills are strong across the board. After all, I have happy clients working in every genre.

When I pay to watch a movie, I prefer action thrillers, but during my tenure at Fox I was considered comedy guy. The only type of film I'd rather not read is "torture porn" horror.

I sent Mechanic an action script because he appeared to have an action-film sensibility. And I wanted a focused review with that kind of mindset. But what pulled me in was his studio experience. And that proved to be an advantage. My script's structure was solid, but Mechanic was able to highlight a couple of holes in it. Easily fixed, too.

But he outlined why "this" or "that" would or might prevent a sale, and he was also able to clarify where the script fit into the marketplace. I wrote that particular script for the $2-5m action market (direct-to-DVD, with potential of a wide release with a punchup session and a star). And Mechanic steered his review exactly in that direction.

Just avoid coverage from guys like that NYU screenwriting teacher I had for a semester (a very long semester). He would always tell me to put two gay guys kissing in the first 10 pages of my scripts. I swear it was like a rule of his. No matter how good a script was, it was never good enough if there wasn't two guys kissing in the first 10. Not kidding, he was for real.

I am glad that someone asked you a question about genres. In regards to "torture porn horror", I know that some movies like Hostel and the Saw sequels have been considered torture porn horror.

Would you classify the Friday the 13th movies as torture porn horror as well? I am asking because one script that I have is very similar to Friday The 13th, and I am not sure how you would feel about covering a script like that.

                            thanks

I provide objective coverage/notes on any type of story. I bet I've covered well over a thousand horror screenplays in my career. Some of the produced titles that spring to mind: Scream, Sixth Sense, Freddy vs Jason, Turistas, Wrong Turn, The Hills Have Eyes...

Then there are then hundreds of unproduced horror specs. Every grisly style imaginable. And some you could never imagine.

Seriously, I've read some messed up sh*t.

I've read it all. That helps me help you.

I have used EvilRbt's service around four times now. Every time, I receive great notes at a great price. Drew's always got some outstanding advice concerning my script that I simply overlooked or missed.

My latest script received great notes from ExtHollywoodDay (Bart), EvilRbt and ScritpGal - all here on DD. That script went on to place in the semis (top 129 out of 7197 scripts) in this year's Nicholl.

We're very lucky here on DD having writers/readers with their experience offering their services at these prices. Great service, great value.

I have been a huge fan of EvilRbt since I received his first set of coverage notes: very insightful, incredibly useful and outstanding value for money.
