  • iScript - paid Script Readings for $200-$250

I haven't tried this service, but it seems like an interesting idea.

i think it would be fun just for kicks, but i'm not sure many in the industry would like to "read" their scripts this way...

Their office space looks a little scary.

I'm not sure about that. They used to have an office space on the Universal lot. At least one of their principals was involved with some decent production work. They've been operating for two/three years now, but I'm not sure, as a writer, it's worth the price. I would think it would be more beneficial to the executive who has the money to spend on it.

I've never seen any indication of what execs are actually using the service.

I think they are closer to The Little Nittery than Universal.

Why would any exec use it? Or, more to the point, why would anyone with access to cheap interns use the service ?

I wish them well with their business - but I suspect that desperate writers are their target market rather than people with real projects !

It is odd that not a single of their examples is a screenplay - which is allegedly what they are trying to sell their service as doing.

I'm not sure why someone would seriously pay $250 for someone to read their screenplay out loud.

I guess its for those industry people who have long commutes. Could horribly backfire if you get a bad actor reading your script.

I definitely wouldn't pay anyone $250 for this. If I wanted to launch my script this way, I'd make my own recording.

I agree, but they're still afloat two/three years later. Someone's using it. But who? I can't honestly see even a very naive screenwriter shelling out $250 for it. After all, we have those lovely voices on Final Draft if we want to hear it out loug.

But it isn't priced like that.

Imagine you had a long commute - so you had the choice of paying $250*2*5 every week to make use of that time. That's $130,000 every year !

You could just pay an assistant - and get them to do useful work as well !

So I can't believe that the 'industry people with long commutes' are their target market. Spec writers desperate for a perceived edge on their competition would be their target market.

I agree, but they're still afloat two/three years later.
It's an internet business. Once it is set up it costs $20 a year to keep the page up there. It would have no employees - just some people who run the project in their spare time - or would if they got any business....

Yeah, but once upon a time, they were actually paying actors to read them, which is why I happen to know of them.

Indeed - but they only need to pay an actor if someone pays them.

So the business overall has a very low burn rate - it can lay idle for months without any income, because the fixed expenses are pretty well non-existent.
