  • Most Overrated Best Picture Winners

After watching THE GODFATHER yesterday, I thought this would be an interesting topic. Off the top of my head (and in no particular order):

    THE GODFATHER
    TITANIC
    SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE
    MILLION DOLLAR BABY
    CHICAGO

Silence of the Lambs. It won all the major awards that year. Musta been a slow year.

    Honorable mention: Gump

Chicago is just awful in so many ways.

          This isn't the Howard Johnson's.

I'm not trying to dimish the impact of this film in the realm of cinema and elsewhere. I think it's a good film. I enjoyed it. But, that said, it is terribly overrated.

I could watch the Godfather once a year for the rest of my life. It's a masterpiece.

I think a A Beautiful Mind was overrated, overall a forgetful film until this post.

God knows why the Godfather has been mentioned on this thread?

I turned Chicago off after 15minutes because I was so f#cking bored. Does anyone remember what chicago was running up against?

                          Chicago beat:

                          The Two Towers
                          Gangs of New York
                          The Hours

and the film that was robbed ...

The Pianist (won best actor, director, and adapted screenplay)

My theory is that ANY film that is continually bandied about as the best of all time (Citizen Kane, Casablanca) is subject to claims of being overrated. Partly because people get sick of hearing about it, but mostly because once a film achieves that level of sublimity, the only benchmark for comparison is perfection. It thus can't help but fall short (even though it still is the "best").

A Beautiful Mind - This film was crap. Boring, manipulative and hokey which is Ron Howard's trademark.

Forrest Gump - The first time it's fresh and original and has a catchphrase you mutter to yourself for the following week. Every viewing after that makes you realize that it's merely a good film, not a great one. The fact that it beat out Pulp Fiction for Best Picture makes me dislike it even more.

Gone With The Wind - The only great thing about this film are the characters of Rhett Butler and Scarlett O' Hara. A better film than The Wizard Of Oz? No 'effin way.
