  • Song That Plays Over Opening or Closing Credits of Movies That You Love

I grew up in the 80s. Half my iPod (I mean iPhone now me old) are songs from soundtracks. Some of my all time favorites. When I'm writing I'm often thinking about the song that will play over the end credits of my movie to be inspired...

I have 100 choices. I just thinking about this because I learned a Counting Crows song at the end of Rounders can ONLY be heard there. It never got released. So that is a great choice.

If you want to pick a great song from a montage like Revenge of the Nerds building their house -- that is fine -- but mostly I'm talking about that opening or closing songs to movies that stay in your head and you associate with those movies.

But let me start off with the one that made me think of posting this.

    BACK TO SCHOOL

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxzLfnbsde8 Jude Cole -- Back To School

Video terrible, but I love this song! And this movie.

Also I love it when the song is 100% made for the movie and yet the artist takes that assignment and makes it still good on its own.

I have seen a grand total of 3 super hero/comic book movies in theater if you include The Rocketeer. I heard good things about Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool and went to the theater for that one and in the first few notes of Angel of the Morning, I knew I would be happy with the film.

Some of these clips are just before credits roll:

Also, end of Cruel Intentions with Bittersweet Symphony https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TBgPkbv9HA

Opening of Sahara with some Dr Hook Right Place, Wrong Time and ending with the Faces' Stay with Me
      .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AX1rttdfeBI

End of Postcards from the Edge Meryl Streep singing "Checkin' Out"

Nobody Does it Better from the Spy Who Loved Me

On TV today (TCM) "Burning Bridges" at beginning and the end of Kelly's Heroes

To Sir with Love: Title song is at beginning, middle and end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXaEf4ktpPA

I don't know the rest -- if you have links to songs be nice -- but this one above is perfect!

Also a great Counting Crows song "colorblind" plays near the end when she's coming up the escalator at Penn Station...

There is a lovely little film from 1973 actually written by Anthony Perkins (Norman Bates of Psycho) and Steven Sondheim.

          The Last of Sheila
          1973

          Dyan Cannon
          James Mason
          Raquel Welch
          James Coburn
          Richard Benjamin

I can't find a clip of the end song, but it is a pleasant surprise to have Bette Midler's version of "Friends" come on at the end.

Another great film the youngsters may not have come across yet...

            The Electric Horseman
            1979

            Jane Fonda
            Robert Redford
            Wilford Brimley
            Willie Nelson

Opening credits "My Heroes have Always Been Cowboys"

Not a great link, but it is there:

and I'm not a Zack Snyder fanboy but I loved the intro to Watchmen with Bob Dylan's The times they-are-achangin'

                I have quite a few.

Deadpool 2-You can’t stop this motherfu****
Can you imagine being a singer in the recording studio belting out these lyrics?

                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39IW6rJHT0s

The Shining-opening credit song (I don't know the name of it)

                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjLip2FZLuA

Krampus-Karol of the Bells end credit

                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3sNoNusBBw

Young Guns 2-Blaze of Glory end credits

                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kwj-dhFpqJI

The end credits songs from each Lord of the Rings trilogy

                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfoU0R2v1Io

                Daredevil-My Immortal

I think this song played during the film instead of the credits, but it is a good example of the song outliving the film cuz nobody thinks of Ben Affleck as Daredevil much anymore.

                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9A6YyEFFSsg

                Congo-Sprit of Africa
Funny side story, I had a friend high on mushrooms when we saw Congo in the theater. He sat on the sticky floor and drummed the floor with his hands to this song throughout the whole end credits. He kept good timing. Lol

                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIGiHxklK38

My favorite-Big Trouble in Little China theme song plays on end credits
Here is the official video of John Carpenter’s band singing it. You can’t help but boogie down when this song plays.

The keyboard player is Nick Castle, the Shape/Michael Myers from Halloween films.

I don't even have to click... they call him Howard the duck... yeah...

Halloween 1978 is my favorite film. My buddy just sent me a Nick Castle cameo at one point during pandemic to cheer me up.

I love Big Trouble in LIttle China -- no memory of that song or that video with Michael Myers playing keyboards... amazing.

And Young Guns 1 and 2 are 2 of my all time favorites growing up.

Interesting thread. I always think about this too and in some instances I've considered putting notes in my scripts with song suggestions. I imagine that is probably frowned upon and won't matter in the end, but I might do it anyway on my next one. Apparently Vince Gilligan had to fight like hell to make this- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R95f...lJordenHarrell - the ending song for Breaking Bad.

^If we're talking the great duo of Carpenter and Kurt Russell then The Thing had awesome opening/closing music- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AOi...wardWinchester
I didn't care for that movie as a kid (perhaps unsurprisingly) but now it's one of my favorites.

                      Opening to Drive- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MV_3...l=RecordMakers
I love this movie and I'm disappointed that Gosling and that director couldn't do it again with that turd Only God Forgives.

Hell yes to Darthclaw for mentioning LOTR. The Two Towers ending is the best. That song over the final shot of Mount Doom and Sauron's eye is one of my favorite film moments.

I'll think of some more later.

Here I go... I'm sure some of these are not the "end" song, but screw it. Just a huge song that makes you think of the movie or you heard from that movie as a child.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MTsZgcoiXU Running Man. Same guy who did St. Elmo's Fire another great movie song. Maybe one of the best ever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dx7vNdAb5e4

Pretty much love every Rocky song there is. But my favorite ending song is from Part 5 -- Elton John. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYLbASoecyc. Better than the movie itself, but I see it as a song to the entire series of films. Men love Rocky. We cry like babies.

                        I love Mannequin -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wxyN3z9PL4
