  • Cliffhanger endings in feature film: Are they a good thing or a bad thing?

Watched Killer Joe (2012) today (only because I could). Did not relish the cliffhanger ending. This despite the Oscar-winning direction of William Friedkin and the screenwriting of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tracy Letts.

The conclusion of the feature film left a lot of juggling balls in the air. Sure, a cliffhanger ending might be a great idea if a sequel is guaranteed, or for a limited series at season’s end, but I found myself cursing the screen because the two persons mentioned above allowed that ending. It was, for me, highly unsatisfying.

By now, it seems a sequel was not in the offing either. Is the cliffhanger ending a good thing or not?
