  • Sex In Movies Doesn't Sell

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- The last time "Basic Instinct" man-eater Catherine Tramell prowled the big screen, the studio erotic thriller was hitting box office heights. The first "Instinct" took the top spot when it debuted in 1992, with an opening weekend of $15.1 million, the equivalent of $20.45 million in today's dollars.

Re: Sex In Movies Doesn't Sell

"I like erotic thrillers. But in the last 10 years, I haven't found any scripts that interested me."
That says it more than any "sex doesn't work in movies" headline.

As long as people like sex, then the movies showing beautiful and handsome movie stars in sexy stories should sell. Sell what is the question. Maybe people wait to rent 'sexy' movies on dvd ... (because where are all the money-making porno theater houses now? On dvd. It wasn't the 'sex' entertainment that got unpopular, it was the context that changed.

Sharon Stone is simply yesterday's sex symbol and didn't pull in the audience on the first weekend. That's not the death knell for human sexuality.

Joe Eszterhas leaves a bad taste in some people's mouths. zalman king is a schlock merchant according to some.

Sex is here to stay. If HW can't figure it out so people go to the theaters ... that's just one more of HW's blindspots, imo.

They need new blood. They need new ... well ... whatever.

Is that why the porn industry out earns Hollywood by a wide margin?

Why is this news? Showgirls bombed something like ten years ago.

Audiences want to see character and emotions, like in Brokeback Mountain, they don't want to see **** and ass in a theater crowded with people. They can watch that at home in the nude while participating like good Christian people.

            Sigh.

That may be the actual answer: Why watch simulated sex when you can see the real thing? I think VHS began kind of a "porn revolution" - now you could watch sex in the privacy of your own home! But some folks needed to ease into it gradually, through edgy R rated stuff - movies that weren't porn but offered sexy material. "Hey, man, Al Pacino stars in it, so I know it's not porn!" Kind of like sticking your toe in the pool to test the waters. Water's warm, let's buy some porn! Now it's a huge industry - we don't need to see porn in a cinema, we can get it on our computers!

I think sex still sells, but people just aren't buying it on the big screen as much as they used to.

Note to producers: Make sure you add sex and nudity for your European distributors.

                  case in point--

Has anyone seen Sex and Lucia?

The sceme where Belen (Elena Anaya, one of the hot vampire chicks from Ven Helsing) takes time out from babysitting Luna to **** Lorenzo? Jeez. That huge dog of hers gets anxious, starts licking its lips at her, she tells him something like "not tonight" (subtle enough to get past the US censors, but the implication is clear)--and the dog gets jealous, mauls the girl to death while Belen is... preoccupied.

A crime of passion, committed by a dog... that's gotta to be a first in mainstream cinema.

I'm working towards some sort of point... It's nonetheless a hugely subtle piece of work, non of this is shown on screen. A bit of foreplay, nothing explicit.

                  In The Cut was sexy.

it unspooled into a disastrous third act, but it was sexy and atmospheric.

Now... has anyone seen Battle in Heaven?
