  • Tom Hanks Favors "2001" and More

Tom Hanks recently revealed what are some of his favorite films of all time. At the top of the list is Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" in which he says he can't get enough of it. "That's what I'm looking for when I go to see a film, just like any other cinema-goer. The period, the topic or the genre don't matter to me. The only thing that matters for me is: 'boy, what would you do if that were you?'" He also sites Francis Ford Coppola's mafia classic "The Godfather", Joel Coen's crime thriller "Fargo", Paul Thomas Anderson's porn industry centered "Boogie Nights" and Gus Van Sant's high school violence drama "Elephant" as other personal favorites. An interesting group of five very different movies.

and that's how you make a believable sympathetic protagonist out of any kind of character and is key to a successful story.

      Elephant fukcing sucked.

But The Godfather, 2001, Fargo and Boogie Nights are awesome.

I concur. That POS doesn't belong in the same breath as those other films.

          Fargo sucked too.

          Over-rated piece of crap.

Cleary, Two-bit, your conservative conspiracy media bias has tainted your view of this film.

            because it is good.

Boogie Nights. Best film in the last 10 years. Way to go Tom.

              This isn't the Howard Johnson's.

I disagree. Hardly any filmmakers have tried to tackle the issue of school violence and I think overall "Elephant" is a strong film.

If he saw it when it first came out, we saw it in the same theater. Century Dome in Pleasant Hill, CA.

And... that's my theory of successful films - we identify with the lead character to the point that we become them... we feel like those things are happening to *us*.

Just a quick note on Hanks. I recently saw a clip of a tv interview with him that was around the time when he was on the rise. And he said that he didn't think he had what it took to "make it." Just thought I'd mention that.

12 minute shots of people aimlessly wandering around and doing things that have nothing to do with whatever plot the movie was supposed to have is about as exciting as watching the process of evaporation. It wasn't so much a tackle as it was a weak and pathetic shuffle. By far one of the most boring and useless films I have ever had the displeasure of seeing. I've seen better independent shorts on IFC made by people with far less experience than the genius who thought he could remake Psycho.

Elephant was great. Boogie Nights sucked.
