Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Life of Brian, The Big Lebowski, Fargo, O Brother Where Art Thou?, The Producers (mel brooks), Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Dr. Strangelove, etc.
While the argument that the communal experience can enhance the enjoyment a comedy on the big screen seems valid, I still am with JayKid. I always save the comedies for DVD.
Definitely disagree .... comedy is my second favorite genre to watch in theaters for the group-laugh experience ... The Coen Bros. Ladykillers was a laugh riot because I saw it in a packed house on the edge of Harlem. People were falling out of their seats they were laughing so hard.
I watched There's Something About Mary for the first time alone on my couch and only laughed once. At the "Bret Fahv-rah" line.
Oh, and my first favorite "genre" to watch on the big screen are "big movies" ... The Aviator, Pirates, Spider-man, LOTR, etc.

I would never have thunk it from a guy who refers to indies most the time.
"I ask every producer I meet if they need TV specs they say yeah. They all want a 40 inch display that's 1080p and 120Hz. So, I quit my job at the West Hollywood Best Buy."

Why talk about tentpoles when everyone else is? I prefer indie/foreign to most Hollywood pap, but I love a well executed "big" movie. Raiders of the Lost Ark remains one of my favorites after all these years and still reigns as the movie I've seen more often than any other both in the theater and on home video.
I hate seeing horror movies in the theater ... most folks get frightened more easily than I do and their screams of terror and wails of agony run right over the dialogue of the banal teens in skimpy clothes up on screen.
I think all movies are better in theatre. If I were forced to watch Basic Instinct 2 I'd rather see it on a big screen with good sound so it doesn't seem too crappy. Same thing with Superman Returns. I won't be renting or buying that - but it was damn good on the big screen, regardless of all it's cons.
Also, I'm not implying Superman was anywhere near as bad as BI2
I agree, sort of. If I can't wait to see a movie at home, I'll go to the theater.
The fact is, if all movies were released on DVD the same time as the theaters, the theaters would go out of business tomorrow.
In the theater that I go to, there's a plug before the movie where they show an actual size 50 inch TV screen on the 50 foot movie screen. Some guy pushes the TV away and says "Watch movies they way they were meant to be seen," or something like that. You can't get anymore desperate than that.
