    DH?

I really don't watch baseball if that's what it's about. I just thought it was a cool analogy.

You're probably a fan of the DH too.

I just don't enjoy watching Sunset Blvd. It's like 9 innings of shutout baseball to me.

I'm sadly behind on my Wilder, but I can say that I really loved The Lost Weekend.

Sunset Boulevard didn't excite me. I appreciate the film but it's not something I would ever watch for fun.

I'm waiting for the new Double Indemnity dvd to see that, and I'll probably pick up Some Like It Hot at the same time.

I have Stalag 17 on dvd but never got around to seeing it yet.

Waiting for a new dvd of The Apartment, and I missed Sabrina when it was on TCM a month or so ago. Oh well.

Anyone seen A Foreign Affair? Crowe thought it one of Wilder's best. Wilder thought it his most personal film.

I saw "Ninotchka" yet again the other night. Beautifully-written, vintage Wilder (great Garbo, too), and you can see how Lubitsch influenced Billy. Wilder had a little sign in his office that read: "What would Lubitsch do?"

He said looking at it when he and his partner were stuck gave him the inspiration he needed.

I think if I had a third of Wilder's talent I'd be a lot happier with my writing.

and I'd go with Jake's list, but I'd bump Stalag 17 higher up on the list.

That's a good one. Stanwyck and Cooper are excellent in that.

Yeah, NINOTCHKA is another great comedy that he co-wrote but did not direct.

I watched Double Indemnity yesterday (UK's Film 4 channel is now free, hoorah!) and laughed out loud with the pleasure of hearing that dialogue. My other half hadn't seen it before and was glued to the screen, she didn't even insist on switching channels for her daily soap dope fix, and that's a first let me tell ya.

What about One, Two, Three? Great performance by Cagney.

Impossible to rate 'em. Will we ever see Ace in the Hole aka The Big Carnival on DVD? - it is looking doubtful.

I'll rate all of what I've seen, none of which I've disliked outright...

    1. The Apartment (by a mile)
    2. Some Like It Hot
    3. Double Indemnity
    4. Sunset Boulevard
    5. The Lost Weekend
    6. Witness for the Prosecution
    7. The Fortune Cookie
    8. Stalag 17 (far too much comic relief)
    9. Seven Year Itch
    10. Sabrina

Still need to see Ace in the Hole (a DVD released would be nice) and Love in the Afternoon, and I hear One, Two, Three is good too.

    Ah. My favorite director.

    I'll go with:

    Stalag 17 (cuz I love war-related movies)
Sunset Boulevard (cuz I love Hollywood-related movies)
    The Lost Weekend (
cuz I've had so many of them myself)
    Double Indemnity
    (cuz I love film noir)
    Some Like It Hot
    (cuz I love MM)
    The Apartment
    (eh)
    Sabrina (
    eh)

Haven't seen Ace in the Hole or Sherlock Holmes. I'll look for them.
