  • Can anyone top the product placement in Zoom?

Just took my kids to see ZOOM.

    Wow...

When I was a kid, I absolutely used to hate it when someone in a movie would be drinking a soda that suspiciously looked like a coke (red and white can), but just had SODA spelled out in Coke-like letters. I always thought the generic names were so lame, so I never really minded when product placement became part of movies. I mean, it sure as hell looks a lot more realistic to just see someone drinking a COKE instead of a SODA.

But how far is too far?

    Zoom featured the following:

    1. A robot actually named MR. PIBB because it was his duty at one time to fetch snacks.
    2. A scene in which a girl demonstrates her mind powers by manipulating several M&Ms, all with their "M" proudly facing the camera (and very close up)
    3. A scene where Tim Allen and company go to Wendy's. The scene drags on, showing the Wendy's logo tons of times in just a few minutes. They actually order from the menu, naming specific Wendy's items like Big Classics and Frosties. When the scene is over, Tim Allen can still be spotted carrying around his Wendy's bag with the logo clearly displayed.
    4. A scene in which Tim Allen walks into the room carrying several boxes of Little Debbies.

I didn't even really start counting these scenes until the Mr. Pibb thing, so God only knows what I missed before that.

Is this going too far? Can you guys think of any movies that push even more than this? And Talledega Nights doesn't count in my opinion because it is spoofing Nascar, which is nothing but product placement on wheels. That movie managed to incorporate tons of product placement, but in a funny way that became part of the story- it was meant to be blatant and stupid.

Well Harold and Kumar Go to Whitecastle comes to mind. Although that isnt a surprise.

I read somewhere that chain stores are starting to pursue movie ideas where they can showcase their product.

What I can't stand is TV. I don't want ANY anymore. Dead Serious. If i had Tivo, maybe a different story. I watch ESPN and Fox Sports and that's about it.

I was at a friends house and they were watching house.. this is how the mise-en-scene was:

HALF of the screen was a cup of corporate brand coffee 5 inches from the camera (or so it seemed) and the other half was the actor, 10 feet away. The camera had to be low to the table inorder to get in the cup thus the actor's head barely fit on camera.

Hmm. it's amazing what pisses you off at 3:00am

Early, the first movie that comes to my mind is The Terminal. It looked like they shot it in an up-scale shopping mall. Absolutely absurd.

        I, Robot

Almost made me barf in my popcorn and want to keep eating to suppress the feeling I got from watching that 2 hour long commercial.

Then there's the Acme™ of product placement, Josie and the Poo-saycats. Although it was claimed to be part of the satirical aspect of the film, it still stands that there was placement in pretty damned near every frame of the film...for real companies. Playing it both ways, the film was probably in the black before anyone even showed up on the set.

          Still enjoyed the film, though...

Mission to Mars had an unusually long shot of a Dr. Pepper pack floating across the movie screen. It wasn't subtle at all, the pack rotated in zero gravity and when it reached the center of the movie screen the Dr Pepper logo was conspicuously facing the camera, i.e., the audience.

              Ugghh...

That's pretty bad. Pretty soon we're going to start seeing scripts like:

              INT. HOSPITAL - DAY

DR. PEPPER, 30s, stands over the bed of his patient, MR. GOODBAR. His face is grim.

              DR. PEPPER
I'm afraid it doesn't look good, Mr. Goodbar.

              MR. GOODBAR
I just hope I live long enough to say goodbye to
              my friend Jack.

              DR. PEPPER
              Jack?

              MR. GOODBAR
My old college pal, Jack Daniels.

NURSE RONALD MCDONALD enters. He takes Mr. Goodbar's blood pressure, smiles, then makes glittering magical golden arches in the air with his fingers before leaving the room.

Which brings up that age-old question: If a product placement occurs and no one is in the theater to see it, does it help sell the product?

                  Weekend total: "Zoom," 4.6 million.

When you're watching a movie and you stop to ask yourself, "What the **** is a Dr Pepper doing in the middle of the screen?" it's going to far. I don't mind product placement when it's subtle, but that scene was bull****.

My only complaint about product placement is that I can't find a store that carries Laughing Clown Malt Liquor ANYWHERE!!
Does this even count as a blog?

I could go for some serious Laughing Clown right now. Mmm... goes down smooth.

I'm with an earlier poster. I don't mind product placement, but when it's so jarring that you actually stop and say "Seriously?" Anyone remember Peter Parker snagging himself a Dr. Pepper can when learning to use his webs? Like that couldn't have just been a picture or something.

I'm not sure about the Back to the Future product placement, at least with Tab. I think that was a joke, but I do remember some Pepsi product placement.

Ok, then. What's a COOL example of product placement? I have two:

                        1. Superman throwing General Zod through the big Coke sign in Sups II.
                        2. One of my all time favorite lines: "Nathan Jr. needs some Huggies."

There's product placement in life, baby.

But I understand the feelings toward it.

though i must say it bugs me when in a movie the guys walks into a bar and says, "gimme a beer".

Now, unless the bar he walked into only serves one kind, my guess is the bartender would reply "what kind?"

While product placement doesn't appear to be going away any time soon, I do believe a better job could be done to incorporate it less blatantly.

Stallone's "Cobra" was one of the first that really struck me as was obvious.

Mike Myers handling of it in Wayne's world was great.
