  • House of Flying Bulletproof Monks of Heaven

'Twas my birthday the other day and a few cut-price DVDs came my way:

HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS - clever, beautiful, poignant, and cuts off just as the army is advancing on the Flying Daggers' HQ, giving me a major WTF?! moment. A little too much wirework for my liking, with even ordinary soldiers floating through the bamboo forest and performing inhuman feats. We also shouted "For fvck's sake, just die!" a lot towards the end. Overall, didn't quite fire on all cylinders, but still had its moments.

BULLETPROOF MONK - failed on all levels to deliver its potential. This could easily have become a classic action film; instead, it belongs at the bottom of the bargain bucket. An infuriating waste of resources and talent.

KINGDOM OF HEAVEN - having seen numerous comments hereabouts I expected a clucking turkey, but was pleasantly surprised. Not once did Orlando Bloom hug Eric Bana's thigh and sob like a girl.

    I'm just saying. Carry on.

    -Derek
My Web Page - shameless vampyre fiction & other shameless writings.
This is the crack team that foils my every plan? I am deeply shamed.

It wasn't my birthday so a number of bargain priced DVDs came my way this week ...

Chungking Experss - never seen it, but heard good things

Cocktail - the first bar scenes were filmed on my block

Dead Poets Society - an old favorite

Dirty Pretty Things - perhaps my favorite Stephen Frears ... and Audrey Tautou!

Drop Dead Gorgeous - arguably my favorite comedy

Ever After - a friend is writing the Broadway musical

Fever Pitch - I'm a Sox fan. Nuff said.

    Finding Neverland - magical.

I thought my "H" titles were a bit lacking in my DVD collection so I added ...

Harold & Maude - hysterical and magical.

Harry & Tonto - poignant and magical.

    High Fidelity - enjoyable.

The Hudsucker Proxy - Jennifer Jason Leigh can act, or so I learned from this flick.

    Hustle & Flow - 2nd favorite movie from 2005.

Infernal Affairs - never seen it, but Scorsese is remaking

The Insider - Russell Crowe transforms himself ... again.

    Kolya - adorable and magical.

The Ladykillers - underrated comedy. Funny as hell.

Millions = My favorite movie from 2005.

Never Been Kissed - Drew Barrymore again ... I bought a 3 pack to get Ever After.

Out of Sight - J-Lo's best film. Red hot chemistry with Clooney.

Roger Dodger - Introduced us to Jesse Eisenberg, reclaimed Elizabeth Berkley's acting chops, and Campbell Scott has fun in this romp.

Rushmore - is there really anything to add?

Shakespeare in Love - won Best Picture. I need to see it again to remember why.

Sideways - More than one person has told me I'm both of those characters wrapped into one person.

    Trainspotting - Danny Boyle rules.

Velvet Goldmine - A 1970s glam rock period drama for $8M? Yes, it can be done.

    I'm just saying, carry on.

Damn, Hairy. That's a load of movies.

Got just 2 for my DVDS collection over the week-end

Amelie and A very long engagement.

There must be a "12 Step Progam" or group therapy for this type of problem Hairy.

It's a good movie that would have done better if it came out before LOTR, Gladiator, King Arthur, Narnia, Troy, etc. I think audiences are a little burned out from this genre.

I already own both of those ... two of my favorites. Jeunet is a master. That reminds me. I still need a DVD of Delicatessen, which was just re-released.

I forgot to order Royal Tennebaums! I guess that's this week's DVD.

Call it retail therapy. Broke up with a girl and she ran off to France.

I go on DVD sprees like that once a month, Hairy. It's a good feeling to know you're stocked up on films.

Watched Harold & Maude this weekend. Fantastic movie.

With the price of HD-DVD and Blu Ray players right now, we're all suckers anyhow.

Yeah, I think I spent $70 on 12 of those in my 2nd order. How many DVD-HDs can you buy for $70?

Well heck, if I'd had a choice of DVDs then I doubt whether I would've picked any of the ones I got.

No, I'd have gone for Buffy series 5, 6 and 7 instead. Modern classics.

                          Good series.

I own Kingdom of Heaven and House of Flying Daggers. Never watched Bulletproof Monk.

Big Buffy fan I take it.

I confess I was only a casual viewer first time round, but daily Buffy reruns on Brit satellite TV have turned me onto the big series character arcs and unfailingly catchy dialogue, and I'm also reading the transcripts of episodes I missed. So yeah it's grown on me. Not to the point where I'm dressing up as Buffy and visiting graveyards in the dead of night, but it's close.

                              Firefly.
                              The Fly/Return of the Fly.
                              Silent Hill.
                              Children of Dune.
                              Bruster's Millions.
                              1984. (Perter Cushing version)
                              The Fog. (original)
