  • Little Children

One of the most satisfying films I've seen in a while.

Kate Winslet is amazing. Patrick Wilson follows his solid Hard Candy performance with another winner in this similarly dark, disturbingly sexual film.

Heavy on the voice-over, which will annoy many, but the story is very competently told.

    Check this out!

      Re: Little Children

I finally got to see this and really liked it. Lovely, balanced story with human characters. Not predictable in the least.

Jennifer Connelly and Kate Winslet are both fantastic (JC is deliciously understated).

Ditto on what ACKward said about the voice over being a possible annoyance to people, but the story was so good it didn't bother me.

          I love her too, Qaz.

She's more supporting screentime-wise, but amazing as usual.

            Re: Little Children

As a huge fan of In the Bedroom I was deeply disappointed with Little Children. While it had the usual Todd Field precision and attention to detail and Winslet-Wilson were almost pitch perfect, the voice over was caustically bad, parts felt like Desparate Housewives, Jane Adams (who I love) did nothing more than reprise her role from Happiness with a bit less comedy, the pedophile came from central casting, and the heart attack, drunk out of work buddy, absentee husband, and nosey neighbors were all reduced to trite cliches. Very disappointed.

I read an article where Field said he worked very closely with the screenwriter to maintain the spirit of the novel, which I now feel I must read, because the film plays cynical, but the tone is not. Felt very uneven. Perhaps after reading the novel and re-watching the film I'll have a different opinion, but my guess is that this would have been much better with distinctly different editing choices.

              Re: Little Children

I hated it. I couldn't empathize with any of the characters, and I didn't understand a lot of their choices. My only consolation? I only paid $4.50 to see it.

Sounds nice, I'll give it a gander.

I suppose melding "Little Miss Sunshine" with Danny Boyle's upcoming "Sunshine" won't really result in the hilarity one would hope for.
