Well, I wouldn't want to disrupt the argument over Spartan physiques and porn ... by mentioning that one of the Spartan military philosophies was to have male homosexual lovers fight side by side on the theory that lovers would stand and fight together better than ... oh, nevermind. 300 chiseled Spartan warriors defending a tight entrance against Persian penetration, squeezed between rock hard mountains. "Thrust with your short sword, Taurus!" etc.

Saw the trailer at APOCALYPTO and I sat in amazement, visual amazement: that's going to be one stunning movie, I think. If the story holds up to the visual impact, it'll change cinema (though, not so sure the film is all that close to the Frank Miller comix art style; didn't see it in SIN CITY, don't see it in 300 ... but then, haven't read the graphic novel, so what do I know about that?)

I caught the curious thing about "freedom" too ... and if that's a true Spartan speaking, what the hell's he saying? Sparta was run like a Hitler youth camp and how many wars did Sparta have with Athens trying to slap the democracy outtah those guys? Please.

But good gosh that looks amazing. I can't wait.

Are you saying that the guys in the trailer are a true representation of a Spartan soldier's physique? Because all I'm saying is that they look way too muscular for the period.



I doubt they were able to achieve the physiques of the guys in the trailer. It's only recently that modern day athletes have worked weight training programs into their regular training to improve their strength. Besides, I bet much of the Spartans were rogues and scoffed at the idea of lifting weights, and spent their time practicing with their swords, using heavier swords to strengthen their arms and shoulders.

You need to do some reading about the Spartan life style. It was nuts.

Want to "visit" your wife? Well, you'll have to sneak out of the male barracks and into the female barracks to do it. then you'll have to sneak back into your barracks, of course.

This wasn't just the warriors, well it was because all Spartans were warriors. They had a slave class to do all the business of civiliazation.

And to be caught was punishable by death.

The Spartans were nuts. Their idea was to make life so miserable that going to war was a vacation.

As I recall, that wasn't the Spartans, that was a different group of Greeks.

I'm not sure if someone already said this but it's definitely "Gladiator" meets "Sin City". Story is pretty simple, but you really care about these soldiers and the battle scenes are UNBELIEVABLE! Take my advice and go see this movie. It's quite an accomplishment.

I see the sizzle, I like the idea of melding some sense of the fantastical/macabre into the story, but something about this just doesn't jive for me. Like taking a bite of chocolate that's too sweet. There's just so much style here, it's hard to breathe - if that makes any sense.

Not really being picking on you here, cg but your posts illustrate what I've heard elsewhere about that movie.

If this is going to be the heterosexual version (and I'm sure it is), then it will rock.

Not sure what sexuality has to do with the version or the story for that matter. Leonidas's possible sexual prowesses had no weight in his last stand at Thermopylae.

And for the record, Spartans regarded love between two men with more disdain than in some other Greek city states. The Spartans looked at the relationship between younger and older men in a mentor like perspective. I don't mean it would exclude any possible sexual relations, I just think it was unlikely to be viewed in the open from Spartan life.

I think Frank Miller depicted the Spartans as a physical and mental wrecking war machine. The life in Sparta was never easy. Nuts? Their daily lives nurtured them to be unbeatable most of the time. So as far as seeing him that lightly dressed, yeah, I do see what some may think. Beefcake. And hey, if it is? Good for them.

I have to say I liked the trailer I just saw on TV far less.

It seemed more cartoonish.

And the excitement wore off. I think it's a mistake to market a movie extensively 4 months ahead.

And I can't believe they used the "freedom" line. In every movie after Braveheart, it rang so hollow.

I don't think I'll be seeing this at the movies anymore.

I thought the original trailer was much better and there's something to be said for the recency effect.

I agree, it looks more cartoonish but then again, it came from FM's graphic novel. Wasn't mean to be anything else per se.

Greek cities were fighting against the invading Persian army. Of course, there will be some talk about freedom. I don't know why people would compare this to Braveheart. Wallace was not the first one to fight for his people's freedom and neither was Leonidas.

I am looking forward to the movie.
