At the beggining of November I bought an HD DVD Player. It's currently outselling Blu Ray by at least 4 to 1 so I felt fairly comfortable with the investment. All I can say, is I'm very glad I did invest! Let me tell you why...
First off, here's the movies I currently own:
1.King Kong
2.Batman Begins
3.Forbidden Planet
4.Charlie and the Chocolate Facotry
5.The Polar Express
6.The Adventures of Robin Hood
7. The Searchers
8. Serenity
9. Casablanca
I can't stress enough how incredible these films look. Up until a month ago I had been using a high end Yamaha upconverting DVD player in my home theater (1080P Projector, 110" screen). It was good, but I was a bit underwhelmed. The movies didn't pull me in the way I expected them too. The picture was too.....flat I suppose you'd say.
This is where HD DVD shines. The vast majority of films I've seen have a very distinct 3D quality to them. When watching the Searchers, it was like John Wayne was right there in front of me walking around in a real space. And speaking of the classics, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Forbidden Planet, Casablanca....you've never seen them look this good. I had the collectors version of Casablanca on regular DVD and ran it simultaneously with the HD DVD version. The difference in the richness of the blacks and the amount of detail is astounding. You'd never think it was made in the 40's.
Now as to the sound difference, I haven't been able to take full advantage yet because there's no HDMI cable available for the Xbox 360 yet, but even simply running a downconverted Dolby plus track or a true dolby track was a HUGE difference over regular DVD's. Every sound coming out of the speakers was incredibly defined and deep and rich.
My Score for HD DVD:
9.8/10 (it'd be perfect if I could get an HDMI cable instead of optical)
