  • Rocky Balboa - A Hit!!

    6.2 Million yesterday.

Predictions are that box office after Christmas should be around 50 mil.(eta: predictions are more in the 30-35 range now. i'll still take it)

    Welcome back, Sly.

You truly are the living, breathing embodiment of the never say die, never give up, give it everything you've got hero's that you've protrayed in your movies.

    Eye of the Tiger.

They've been laughing at you for years.

They laughed when you said you were making this film.

But you showed them. You made a great film and the critics and public have responded.

    And I congratulate you.

I'm sure Eragon, whatever that is, will do fine.

But based on 6mill, it's a pretty safe bet that Rocky will be packing them in all weekend.

Hey, for what it's worth, I though this sounded like a great idea from the first time I heard about it.

I don't understand why some people are slagging Stallone over this. He's a fellow screenwriter (well, sortah, maybe -- but SOMEBODY wrote "Rocky") who created a beloved movie character that's become a cultural icon.

Now, there's a new reworking ... an interesting dramatic issue: c'mon, that's a story, the down & out has been fighting age and another's youth to go out with nobility, not a palooka (or whatever the term is)

Let the Rocky fans enjoy. What ... we need another "torture-porn" horror schlock movie instead of ROCKY BALBOA?

Some movie about a fox gnawing off his leg in a trap would uplift our souls MORE?

I'd give a thumbs up to ANY of us here at DD who did the same as Stallone has done (even if it was a fake-out/psyche-out as the recent "expose" article claims) ...

            I salute you, whoever-gave-us-Rocky ...

May the $$$ Rocky Balboa makes the movie-guys ... be spent on buying one of OUR screenplays.

The WGA says Stallone wrote Rocky. He's always had the screen credit, and I'm not aware of anyone ever disputing that.

You're right, Tab. As someone who has been slagging Sly and expecting this movie to tank, I've been turned around by the reviews and now plan to see the movie. Good luck to him & pass the humble pie...

Re: Rocky Balboa - A Hit!!

Just got back from seeing this movie, and I have to tell you- it put a huge smile on my face. This is a very sweet, well-made film. Honestly, the boxing was just an after thought. What made the film great was a look into Rocky's daily life and the struggle he's going through after losing his wife.

I honestly thought this was just going to be a fun popcorn flick that would require me to check my brain at the door. It wasn't. I thought the acting was well above average and the direction was solid. None of the cheeseball "I must break you" stuff from the past. It might not be what the first one was, but if you even remotely enjoyed any of the other Rocky flicks, this will be a very pleasant surprise for you.

Do those numbers include all the free tix given out in the new dvd release of the original film, cause I'm not using mine until tomorrow.

This goes to show us that nobody knows anything when it comes to predicting what will hit and what won't...

                        A few points though...

Been a long time since a boxing movie was out - that I can remember anyway.

Lots of kids out there have NEVER see a rocky movie on the big screen.

Lots of kids who haven't seen Sly's real tankers.

That aside, a movie with heart can make an impact if it connects with people...

I don't know about that, as of Friday (22nd) it was already 3rd behind MUSEUM and HAPPYNESS. Of course by Tuesday, after Christmas that could change, but keep in mind DREAMGIRLS also opens ON Christmas. So Rocky is already going to be going down the box office listings.

I heard or read Irwin Winkler say if it wasn't for Rocky, they wouldn't have gotten the money to do Raging Bull.
