I seem to remember that Kurosawa's Ran had some bloody chop-em-up battle scenes involving huge armies. How about the Lord of the Rings movies?

I don't know what is the best epic battle sequence with swords, but I bet it has Kurosawa's name on it.

I always liked the battle scene in Orson Welles' Chimes at Midnight...not because it was the most epic, but because he did it with a handful of dudes and some bootlaces and made it look epic.

Watch the old Zatoichi movies, amazing sword fights in all of them. The remake is good but nothing beats the original.

Best one-on-one sword fight is Errol Flynn against Basil Rathbone in The Adventures of Robin Hood.

Best group battle is Jason and his crew against the skeleton army in Jason and the Argonauts.

This may be the thread to get some answers...

I have a vivid image in my head of a movie (I'm thinking 80's maybe later 70's could be wrong though) of hundreds of creatures (look like men but I think their swords were spines) standing before a castle ready to fight.

                          Anyone help me out?

Also to answer the OP's question...

                          The Last Samurai
Samurai Pizza Cats (couldn't break the trend)
