  • Warner Bros. "300" Early Screening Reviews

This Frank Miller adapted film received rave reviews at the Berlin 2007 Film Festival where it made it's World Premier. The Spartans vs the Persians epic at the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C. has superior graphics effects to Sin City and eye catching-choregraphed action battle scenes. Domestic release date is 3/9/07.

"300" a true breakout movie for its star Gerard Butler (Spartan King Leonidas).

Note: Other recent Butler film credits, The Phantom of the Opera (The Phantom); Timeline, Dear Frankie, Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life; Dracula 2000.

I think it looks like a lot of fun. Who gives a damn if it breaks "into the real Block Buster stratosphere"?

Why would I be offended? It's not my movie.

I just don't get why we can virtually never discuss an upcoming movie in this forum without its potential for box office success becoming a factor.

And don't tell me "We're aspiring writers; we should care about the business end." I don't think William Goldman bases his opinion of an upcoming movie on whether or not he thinks it's going to gross in the nine-figure range.

                Warner Bros. might.
That's a great point, Hairy, and when Warner Bros. registers with Done Deal and posts about whether or not 300 will make $300 million, I'll understand where he/she/it is coming from.

I assumed he was Gerard Butler.

Re: Warner Bros. "300" Early Screening Reviews

I just don't get what a movie's projected box office has to do with its perceived quality. I didn't before this thread, and I still don't. Sooner or later -- usually, as in this thread, it's sooner -- every single discussion we have about an upcoming movie turns to "I'll bet it doesn't do $200 million" or whatever. And then, more often than not, we get to have an argument about how much money the movie's going to make, rather than discussing its actual merits.

It's all well and good for film buffs and aspiring writers to be interested in the business. I just find it depressing to see aspiring writers conflating box office success with quality and vice versa. It's like we've got a bunch of aspiring studio execs here, rather than hopeful creative people.
