  • Oscars Tonight! Who are your winners?

Let's pick who we think will win and who we want to win ... winner gets the admiration and respect of their peers. Losers get eternal ridicule.

    Major categories only, of course.

    I'll go first.

    Best Picture

    Winner: Babel
    Want: Letters from Iwo Jima

    Director

    Winner: Martin Scorsese
    Want: Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu

    Actor

    Winner: Forest Whitaker
    Want: Ryan Gosling

    Actress

    Winner/Want: Helen Mirren

    Supporting Actor

    Winner: Alan Arkin
    Want: Mark Wahlberg

    Supporting Actress

    Winner/Want: Jennifer Hudson

    Original Screenplay

Winner: Michael Arndt, Little Miss Sunshine
Want: Guillermo del Toro, Pan's Labyrinth

    Adapted Screenplay

    Winner: William Monahan, The Departed
Want: Alfonso Cuaron, et al. Children of Men

    Documentary

    Winner: An Inconvenient Truth
    Want: Jesus Camp

    Foreign Language*

    Winner/Want: Pan's Labyrinth

    * This category may be better than the Best Picture category this year. Pan's Labyrinth, Lives of Others, and Water are all among my Top 10 list this year. Only Babel and Letters make that list from the BP nominees, though I won't see The Queen until 3:30 this afternoon.

I'm waiting for Biohazard to list his picks, so I can change my answers if any of them coincide.

Re: Oscars Tonight! Who are your winners?

Can someone please tell me what was so great about Mark Walhberg's performance in THE DEPARTED?

I thought Matt Damon and Leo DiCaprio were WAY better than Mark. I don't understand why people rave over his performance. So, he got the part with all the curse words. And. I don't see anything transcendent.

Meanwhile, I'm still mad that Damon and DiCaprio weren't recognized with nominations for this movie.

          Anyway:

I'll take the ridicule for being more disinterested this year than I've ever been. Other than being mildly interested in Murhpy, and wanting Whittaker to win, for some reason this season seems bland... And I'm going to cut off my tiresome rant about documentaries right now. :-)

Sometimes it's not about how great the performance. Walhberg was a sparkplug in an otherwise slightly overrated film and he put a good chunk of authenticity into the role. Hell, I think he was more interesting than Jack.

This is how I explain Eddie Murphy's nomination to people.

But I don't see "spark plug" when I watch Wahlberg in the Departed. And I certainly didn't think he was more interesting than Jack. Authenticity? They all brought that. Great cast.

It's wild how disparate opinions can be. I liked Mark in BOOGIE NIGHTS of course.

But Mark was actually a nonentity for me in The Departed and I remember cringing that he got to kill Damon's character at the end. His character didn't deserve that honor. I'd rather Damon had killed himself or redeemed himself.

                      Anyway ....

Re: Oscars Tonight! Who are your winners?

Don't care who wins, they're all winners. Besides, careers of Oscar winning actors have been tanking in recent years.

Halle Berry, Mira, Marisa, Swank, Paltrow, Brody, Foxx (aside from an okay Dreamgirls performance), The Guy From American Beauty, Kidman (man, has she had some stinkers)...etc, etc. What happened to the woman who won Best Supporting Actress for CHICAGO? What's she been up to when she and her husband are not suing everyone?

I'll watch it for Martin's Susan Lucci moment though.

Re: Oscars Tonight! Who are your winners?

                          Best Picture

The Academy loves to reward "quality, highbrow" cinema that also has a "message", and as I cannot see them letting Little Miss Sunshine win (lack of a Best Director nom kills it) and The Departed is not quite good enough, I'm thinking Babel is taking the top award.

                          Winner: Babel
                          Want: Babel

                          Director

I cannot see Marty not winning, as it would create a mini-riot and give more fuel to the anti-Oscar fans of Scorsese.

                          Winner: Martin Scorsese
Want: Martin Scorsese or Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu

                          Actor

No question here, and if Forest loses, this will go down with Crash as the biggest upset ever.

                          Winner: Forest Whitaker
Want: Leonardo DiCaprio (wish it was for The Departed)

                          Actress

                          A 100% lock. 'nuff said.

                          Winner: Helen Mirren
                          Want: Helen Mirren

                          Supporting Actor

Wahlberg is easily the stand-out here, and as much as I wish the actor's branch will reward him for everyone (Leo, Matt, Jack. etc.) in The Departed who got shafted, I have to go with Eddie.

                          Winner: Eddie Murphy
                          Want: Mark Wahlberg

                          Supporting Actress

                          Another deserving dead lock.

                          Winner: Jennifer Hudson
                          Want: Jennifer Hudson

                          Original Screenplay

Because Little Miss Sunshine won't win Best Picture, they'll give it this award as compensation.

Winner: Michael Arndt, Little Miss Sunshine
                          Want: Guillermo Arriaga, Babel

                          Adapted Screenplay

Unless Children of Men stages an upset, I can't see anyone beating Monahan.

                          Winner: William Monahan, The Departed
                          Want: William Monahan, The Departed

                          Documentary

                          Winner: An Inconvenient Truth
                          Want: Who Cares?

                          Foreign Language

                          Winner: Pan's Labyrinth
                          Want: Pan's Labyrinth
